Breakdown vehicle on the V5.
By: LeafSprungHeaven Date: August 29, 2015, 3:44 pm

Evening does anyone know what the process is of changing a V5
from a breakdown vehicle to a regular plg vehicle?
Reason I asked is my mates looking at a series 2a 109 that used
to belong to a garage as a recovery vehicle donkey years ago but
hasn't been changed back to plg.
Is this likely to be a straight forward process or will the dvla
make it really annoying?

If this is the taxation class then don't involve the DVLA. A 2a
will be 1971 or earlier so you should be able to go to the post
office with MOT and insurance docs and change it to historic
when licensing.

Well this is the story he's been given by the seller.
It's a 1966 109 thw bloke has owned for 10 years or so.
On the V5 it was registered 1984 but manufacturered 1966 so it's
always been tax exempt and he's always mot it.
However under vehicle type it says breakdown vehicle apparently
so that would need changing to plg but the question is how would
you go about that in the easiest way as the dvla have a knack or
making a big thing and drawing out any little thing that passes
their useless hands!

Ah, ok. Whoever has been telling him that has been talking out
of their arse. It'll be like my one ton, used from new on trade
plates as a recovery vehicle and registered in the early 80s
when the law changed and made it illegal.
Absolutely 100% leave it alone. The DVLA are incapable of a sane
response plus it means nothing. PLG is a taxation class. Whoever
has told you that appears anywhere else on the form is talking
Bollocks. My ex-recovery vehicle is down as type PICK UP. If I
put a hard top on so be it.

Sounds like your confusing two things, taxation class and the
vehicle description
Taxation class needs sorting - should be historic not PLG as is
a 66
Te vehicle description is what it is, so a breakdown truck is a
breakdown truck even if you don't use it for towing cars ... I'd
not change that to be honest

Yeah to be honest that was my gut feeling I haven't seen the V5
myself so I can't say what's what but if he does get it I'll
post some pics of it it looks like a dog really and has had the
overhang chopped off the back like the ones we had at Mann
eggertons.

Mind you if it's anything like the other motors he's has then
breakdown vehicle is an accurate description ;D

I should add that if you open the can the worms will flow. There
was someone on here a while ago who'd born the brunt of a
previous owner volunteering information to the DVLA that they
didn't need to know. VIC checks, 'Q' plates and all sorts of
nonsense can result as the SH><. in Swansea know less than two
short planks about vehicles. Providing the chassis number on the
V5C is correct (and matches the vehicle) and the taxation class
is correct that's all that matters.
The only other thing I tend to update is the gross weight if
incorrectly noted as '3499 KG GROSS'. That just prevents less
knowledgeable MOT centres wanting to test as class VII when a
standard 109 is class IV. I always note the effective date as
date of registration and enclose a covering letter with
photocopy from the owners manual showing the correct weight. So
far all have come back corrected.

As above, don't bother with the DVLA!! The truck is what it is,
my 109" Land Rover fire tender log book says make "Merryweather"
body style "fire engine" and it's tax & mot exempt? As a fire
engine!! Have managed to tax it at the post office for free
without an MOT, just insured..... The insurance is where the
slight issue may arise, I have a footman James policy with two
standard 109" and a 88" thought I could add the fire truck? But
no, as it is still listed as a commercial vehicle and still has
the compressor fitted and still sign written the insurance
insist it cannot be added to the existing policy and has to be
insured under a classic commercial policy!! So instead of an
extra £10.50 on the existing policy! It's £170 for its very own
shiny new policy :2mo5pow:
Will be getting an MOT when it's running :rolleye0012:
