is there any alternative to door tops, i was hoping for some
roll down cover of some sort

Yes, Exmoor Trim do a roll down door top. Or at least they did.

£200? Ouch. If you want the door top out of the way I think I'd
be unbolting it and putting it back on at the end of the day!

I use mine without nuts on the doortops in summer.
OK, they wobble about a bit, and don't keep the rain out, but I
just chuck them in the back when I go out, or leave them at
home.
