Head Gasket

Hello All
Advice needed Losing some coolant as I need to keep topping up
Not a vast amount though When had rocker cover off other week
there was some mayonnaise under cover Put this down to
condensation as don't do many long runs Have noticed what looks
like a small oil leak/creep from were cylinder head sits on
engine block Is this the sign of the head gasket going I get a
bit of smoke from exhaust when start up That's mainly at half
five though And no over heating problems either
Any advice is appreciated Thanks

I take it that it is a 2.25 Petrol ? Before you commit to the
head check out the silly things like radiator cap seal/heater
matrix and hoses etc.
If you do the gasket spend the money on a decent composite one
and don't forget the oil pipe on the back of the head !

Hello Divie When I did the rocker cover the other week I had it
running on idle for a good 90mins I couldn't see any coolant
drip on to the road or into passenger footwell if hoses or
heater matrix are leaking Coolant level in expansion bottle has
remained about half full So it doesn't seem to be going in there
Must be going somewhere That's why I'm thinking head gasket
Ordered one from paddocks a payen make complete set

Has your radiator cap got the seal on so it can suck the excess
back from the expansion cap when cool.
I chased a suspect leak for two years till some one told me
about the cap seal.

Hello Radiator cap as a big black round seal on it Thermostat is
an 82 degrees one When had it running the other day radiator was
as full as can be Had it running for about an hour today and
can't see any leak And between then and now it's dropped a
little still above the fins though

Did you take the cap off when it was still warm if so it would
not have had a chance to draw the excess back from the expansion
bottle.

With the position of the series three matrix you would not get
drips in footwell unless the footwell is really fkt.

Had engine running with cap on and off Checked level when cool
Will empty expansion bottle and see if anything goes in No drips
coming out of heater matrix either on road or in footwell

Has it on idle last night for about an hour radiator full to
neck Checked this morning and it had dropped I put about a pint
of coolant back in Expansion bottle had gained coolant Now I'm
wondering if it's going in expansion bottle but not sucking back
out Tube to expansion bottle is clear I've checked

Has the tube to expansion bottle got jubilee clips fitted?
If you take rad end of same tube and blow through it with some
fluid in bottle does the air come through the fluid?[ thinking
crack in the tube to base of bottle]
