       1975 ex police 88"
By: Willcox Date: August 2, 2015, 3:15 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I thought it was about time I made a little project thread, I've
owned it since January spotted it on eBay local to me so went
and had a look and as they say the rest is history, it seemed a
bit rough around the edges but a good base to start with, didn't
really know to much about it as it had been off the road since
1989 and had no history with it, so ended up contacting dvla for
more information and eventually got a chuck of old v5s to with
it turns ours it started off life at Glasgow police, I'm now
quite tempted to put it back to how it first started off after
finding out, I don't tend to get to much time to work on it as
its kept away from where I live due to lack of space, so far
I've mainly patched up the chassis just to last a few years and
get it back on the road I'll be getting a new chassis for it in
the future, right so that's probably enough writing for now time
       for photos.

So are you going to paint it up as a 'Pig' motor then ? I
wonder what's the legal position driving around in a vehicle
marked Police, is it OK with an obviously 'obsolete' veh. ???

Simply put, absolutely not. I do work (in buses) for film
companies and often cross paths with prop police cars. They must
have their blues and 'POLICE' branding covered or removed unless
on set or dispensation is given for filming in a public place.
Most have the flexible magnetic signs (like RSPCA vans have for
their logo) that peel off and live in the boot.

Search fora/forum records for a user called "Maltelec". He
restored a 109" SETAC Unit. One of 3 known to exist. He knows
the rules and uses his daily.

I have seen photos and that of maltelec SETAC aka Mr plod, I'll
probably try and get In contact with him about a few bits, and
I've read up that you have to cover up the lights and signs
whilst on the public highway, so not sure if I'll just go for
the jam sandwich look for now

I have heard you need permission to have the reflective striping
       in certain colours too.

They were certainly considering that a few years ago. Back in
the '90s I used to work for the British Red Cross and some of
our .... 'more enthusiastic'... members had striped up their
private cars ::) While it wasn't illegal back then I did read
that the authorities were going to start restricting the use of
battenberg striping for example in order to prevent any
confusion over which vehicles were genuine emergency service
vehicles. Blues & twos have always been restricted of course (as
       are greens!).
I had considered building my old 88 project as a navy blue &
yellow Coast Guard replica but after chatting with some people
at the RNLI I decided against it, even though I know of at least
one such liveried 88 that is in private hands.
In short, I'd seek professional legal advice if I were you ;)
Oh, and in case you haven't found this club -

wel its illegal to paint a land rover white, put police on the
       side and blue lights.
but there is a grey area for preserved/ historic emergency
service vehicles, which yours clearly is bona fide

Ah, well the Police do tend to remove all reflective striping
and Force Insignia prior to disposal, that's a big enough hint I
should think. It could be kitted as a recovery vehicle, and I
think white reflectives are ok on the front and sides, orange on
the sides, and red/yellow on the rears to mimic Chapter * regs.
Under no circumstances should blue or green be used anywhere, or
red/yellow on the sides. Those are specific to the
Police/Fire/Ambulance services, and it could be seen as
impersonation. Unless, as said above, on a genuine preserved
       ex-Force vehicle.

I think that's more the fact that some owners think it's grey!
The regulations are pretty clear, a good summary is here:
  HTML http://www.ukemergency.co.uk/blue-light-use
  HTML http://www.ukemergency.co.uk/blue-light-use
A similar thing that comes up all the time is the red cross on
Marshall ambulances. The Geneva Convention covers the use of the
red cross and restricts the use of it to ambulances etc
providing medical assistance in time of war (or on Red Cross
vehicles affiliated to the British Red Cross for example).
That's why civvy and St John's ambulances don't display it and
all the current flock of MoD ambulances since the 101 have fold
down flaps to cover the red cross up. People still paint it on
their 109s though and think it's ok. wagfinger
