Bim, is this on your '64 2a? If so a gearbox number would help,
as that shouldn't have syncro on 1st and 2nd gear.

Is the nut tight on the rear of mainshaft ie under the cover at
the passenger side of transfer case.

I'm sure someone will come along and say "it's the indent
springs on the selector shaft", as for the syncro that is only
to get the gear set spinning at the same speed to make it easier
       to engage.
As Noel says gearbox number is needed, if yours is non syncro
between 1st and 2nd it's very like the series 1 box I did a few
years back with the same issue, the second and third gear set on
the main shaft sit on a bronze bush that has a thrust washer
between the gears, as this washer wears the main shaft gears can
move back and forth and on overrun throw the box into neutral.
The only way to find out what is wrong is to remove the box and
strip it, there is a problem and it needs fixing, bite the
bullet, crack on, spend some money on some bits and end up with
       a box you can trust.
       Good luck

Assuming the gearbox was set up properly in the first place
there are only 2 real reasons a gearbox will jump out of gear.
Excessive end float on the gear set allowing movement often
       caused by alternate drive/overun loadings
       or
Worn dog teeth on the affected gear.
On older gearboxes these issues often combine!
As has been suggested. Detent springs are for accurate gear
running alignment and do not hold gears together/in mesh.
It is not impossible for the mainshaft nut to be very loose
allowing excessive movement which causes a situation where the
gear selector forks actually tries to disengage the selected
gear but you should notice huge amounts of backlash. Might be
worth a quick check and pull the inspection plate on the top of
your tranny box first just to check it for tightness though.

If you have an overdrive fitted you need to remove it to check
the nut in question. Furthermore if you do have a lot of
endfloat on the mainshaft and it goes unchecked, then it doesn't
do the bearings on the back of the overdrive mainshaft any good.

Hi Bim, my 2a gearbox started misbehaving by jumping out of 2nd
on overrun/downhill and then eventually refused at times to
change gear at all. On removal found that not only the dog teeth
were worn but the the mainshaft bronze bush had broken into 3
pieces making meaningful endfloat irrelevant (even the locating
peg had sheared) Parts not too expensive, more a faff setting up
       the right thrust washers etc...
