Prop UJ greasing
By: kiwi s3 Date: July 24, 2015, 11:10 pm

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for advise on greasing the prop shaft UJs. I've
owned my S3 for 18 months now, so thought it about time I got
underneath and gave everything a good greasing. I bought a new
stainless steel barrelled pistol grip grease gun, with a
flexible hose, a cartridge of grease and got to work. However,
I had hit two problems.
On several of the UJ nipples, the grease squirts out the end of
the gun and around the nipple, rather than through it. I can't
seem to push the end on any further - is the fitting blocked /
broken, or do I need to use more force to push it on?
The second problem is that when I'm not using the grease gun,
it's stored on a shelf with all my spares. Unfortunately, it
leaks grease out of every joint and makes a big mess. There is
a T shaped handle on a rod coming out the bottom of the gun -
does this need to be pulled out to depressurise the gun or
something? It did come with an instruction sheet, but it makes
no sense at all.
Cheers,
Mark,
Wellington, NZ.

Is it a cartridge tytype or the kind you fill from a can of
grease? I had a chinnese can fill type from eBay which did the
same, got rid and bought a reasonably priced cartridge gun from
a motor factors, no problems since, nozzle locks to the most
nipples with no leakage.

I have a Clarke side lever grease gun that seems the same -
grease goes everywhere except into the nipple, and oil leaks out
when it's not used.
Who makes decent quality nozzles?

I find the rigid pipes that screw into the body of the grease
gun work better than the flexible ones as you can keep pushing
hard onto the nipples whilst pumping.

If you cant get grease through the nipple, try unscrewing the
nipple and see if grease will go through it when it is not
fitted. If it is blocked try cleaning in paraffin or similar ,
or replace nipple. I have found a rigid `Wanner` (I think)
grease gun the best as you can push hard if needed, and release
pressure when not in use.

might be the angle of the dangle. i have a 1950s vintage
tecalemit which grease will come out unless the nozzle is
straight on the nipple.
if you cant get straight on the nipple i usually drop the prop
from either the diff or TX box end so then the yoke can be
pushed in such a way to open up the area where the nipple is

I've never had much luck with grease guns either, most seems to
go everywhere but not into the part you want :smiley-furious:

Sounds like you have a clip on type tip on the end of your hose?
You could try a needle type tip. I have found on the u joint
nipples that there is not enough room in there for the bulkier
tip. You can also remove the shroud and get the needle right in
on the ball in the nipple.
As for the leakage if you pull the t bar on the back of your
gun, does it have a locking mechanism that locks it part way or
do you have to pull it right out to lock it? If it had a lock
tab that locks it part way, after use pull the t bar out till
you feel resistance and then pull 5-10mm more this will release
the plunger pressure on cartrage and stop it leaking. When you
go to use it again use the lock tap and push the t bar all the
way in.
Clear as mud?? I may be able to get some pics tomorrow and put
up what I mean to explain better.

On my grease gun...I had to grind a bit off the side of the
nozzle or whatever its called...the bit you shove on the nipple
to allow me to get the correct angle.
On my gun I pull out the T shaped hand or mine leaks.
Nick.

A narrow tipped "self lock on" type of grease gun nozzle
normally works great for landy props. Cheap bulky tips are hard
to align and often wont even go fully on the nipple. A siezed
nipple will cause a good self locking tip to grab hold and not
let go.
Yes you should always remove the pressure by using the chain and
locking it back or pulling back the "t" handle and using the tab
lock. This will make sure nothing leaks out.
