Rocker cover gasket

Hello All About to change my rocker cover gasket Any hints and
tips Never done it before so want to get right first time Thanks

Probably just about the simplest job to do on a series. Three
nuts off the top and lift it off, be careful to position the new
one and pop the cover back on. Do not over tighten, enjoy the
job.

Rocker cover gaskets have a habit of slipping during use. There
are several things to try.
On initial assembly make sure the gasket surfaces are totally
oil free. I use carb cleaner as a great de greaser. I then used
to use a contact spray adhesive on the rocker cover and 1 side
of the gasket, remember the gasket only truly fits one way up!
This method helps with assembly and the gasket stays in the
correct position to start with. Genuine landrover parts used to
supply a pre glued gasket to aid assembly. I dont see those
these days. Maybe someone knows a specific make of gasket that
still does this?
During service though this still allows the gasket to slip.
On our own cars we used to groove the rocker cover. We used to
use a "special screwdriver" and groove the gasket mating surface
of the rocker cover so there is a small groove all the way
around right in the middle of the surface. Now when the gasket
is fitted it is much less likely to slip and when glued the
gasket often can be used over again.

A cautionary word now. If you have a skimmed head of any type
you may want to consider using two rocker cover gaskets glued
together. The clearance between the tappet adjusters and the
rocker cover is very small, as I found to my cost. The 88 has a
2.5 petrol with stage 2 head. I was heading, oddly enough, to
meet up with some other OLLRers for a jaunt over Salisbury plain
when I lost a cylinder on the M3. The RAC man plucked a bent
pushrod out after removing the rocker cover, the impact marks
from the tappet adjuster could be seen quite clearly. The rocker
had momentarily stuck in the soft ally - long enough for the
pushrod to come out of alignment and that was that. I use two on
everything now after that experience.

The gasket is shaped slightly different end to end and fits the
shape of the rocker cover. Its evident with a slight straight
section on one end only.
You can only fit one end towards the front making it only fit
one way up.
I have done the 110 thou skim to a cylinder head several times
in the past. To date I have not had issues with rockers hitting
the cover.
If you are worried about it I suggest dry fitting the cover
without a gasket and see if rockers/adjusters hit anything. If
they do hit then maybe think about modifying the adjuster
screws?

Hello Thanks for all the info so far Think I will be ordering
another gasket and putting two on I don't know if the head has
been skimmed So will err on the cautious side Andy

Job eventually done Used two gaskets and gasket sealer Sealed
one gasket to rocker cover and one to top of engine Put it all
back together and just tightened the nuts up enough Did give it
a good clean out using petrol including the breather There was a
touch of mayonnaise stuff Think that may be from the fact that I
have only been doing short runs out And I lost a bit of coolant
when changing thermostat housing earlier in the year
