Why am I here?t

Hello
I have owned a 1969 series 2a dormobile for 15 years now and
have come to the conclusion that there is no such thing as a
mechanic who can work on my vehicle for any amount of money and
actually be able to do the job right why ? I have no idea I am
not a mechanic but I have managed to do my own wheel bearings
brakes broken 1/2 shafts replace radiators pumps belt etc etc
etc After having my gear box removed 5. Times 2 times for
leaking crankshaft oil seals 3 times for broken gears ect and
then finding a patch of oil on my drive way the size of a large
pizza I decided to take the plunge get an engine hoist and pull
out the gear box myself what did I find well a lovely brass
sleeve bearing with a chunk out of it hmm now how did that
happen ? I have now replaced it along with new seal put it all
back together driven it around for a few weeks notice gear box
very noisey wines like a howling gorilla but no leaks :-):-):-)
oh wait what's that banging and rattling ok back to my drive way
before something blows up now all I need are some trouble
shooting tips before I attempt to do any thing else with my new
engine hoist

Ah yes, if you want a job doing right, do it yourself
:rolleye0012:
There are guys out there who run old-school Land Rover garages,
and who can be trusted though.
Whereabouts in the country are you? There might be someone local
who could advise/help/listen.
Cheers,
Robin.

I cannot say how much I wish I had the time/expertise to do ALL
of my own mechanicals.
Even specialists (such as the local one to me) make mistakes.
Mine replaced a brake line without then topping up/bleeding the
clutch system (shared reservoir) :banghead So now it stops, but
the gear changes are tough.
All credit to you for tackling the gearbox!

The question is can I replace the intermediate gear without
removing the transferbox?

Yes if you take the handbrake drum and back plate off.
But examine the other gears carefully especially the overdrive
best pull that off and examine / clean the parts inside the
shaft you can see
