Help! My Series has 2 chassis numbers!!!
By: ruseyrek Date: July 4, 2015, 4:45 pm

Hi all,
I'm restoring my Series III 109" SW and have a question
I just cleaned my chassis and softly sandblasted the chassis
number and here is what I got:

The bottom number is what I knew existed before and is on my
registration.
the top number and the bottom right bit that says: 3197 X V62 is
all new and very puzzling to me.
Both come up as chassis numbers on CalVIN and the correct
vehicle: 1973 Series III 109 6 cyl.
What do you think this all means?

They look factory stamped. Maybe an error at the factory? Back
then they wouldn't have been so concerned so perhaps one was
covered up and the correct one stamped? Was the 'wrong' no lead
lined? They used that technique to cover up damage and dents
etc.

Is the original number not normally stamped on the rail above
the spring hanger?

I wasn't there for the sandblast so have no idea of a cover up.
What about the numbers below, any idea what they might be?

They're definitey struck by the factory dies so I'd wager it had
all that stamped there the day it rolled out of Solihull. I
would think you may get more info from someone like Phil Bashall
at Dunsfold.

It looks totally kosher to me, the whole number is close to the
other one numerically, and there's the 'coded' bit at the
bottom, it's not like someone's boshed a number from some
phantom id over the original...it ties in with logbook too, (
certainly don't go opening can of worms at the dvla tho ! )
...interesting.

Just noticed you're in Istanbul ! ...so no worries from our dvla
muppets for you ! Dunno what your lot are like, but as one of
the numbers ties in with your paperwork I'd just paint over
everything and carry on

Oh they are TUV muppets trust me!
they already cost me a beautiful 90 years ago thinking LR
chassis number stamping was a bit too crude to be original. -
Had to de-register and part it out.
So I will cover the rest up like you say. I was just curious to
find out what it all meant.

:rolleye0012: At least you'll know exactly where to scrape the
paint off , if they do ever want to see the number that matches
your papers ;-)..Voila !
