       Picking brains already.

       Hi All
First brain pick already(must be a land rover zombie!). Do any
of you fine Leafers out there know what part number the inner
hub seals(the ones that stop the axle oil coming past the half
shaft and out of the stub axle, not the wheel bearing seal) are
for a rear Salisbury axle(109) ? If there are more than 1
variant please tell me all numbers. I have surfed the net a bit
but cannot find a definite answer. Help!
       Regards,
       Percy.

You should find all the part numbers
  HTML http://www.smithies.co.nz/land_rover/
       you need here. AFAIK you
have a choice of leather or rubber, I've used both in the past,
leather need soaking in oil for a couple of days/hours or so
       before fitting.

       I reckon RTC3510 up to 1979/80 and RTC3511 after 1979/80......
the early one is a flat seal the late seal is double lipped and
the inner part of the seal sticks up. Early stubs have a
removable bearing "land"/seal running surface. The later stubs
don't have this luxury. Later stuff is unique, the stubs,
bearings and seals are rather expensive....

It's also worth having a look at what you've got on there before
ordering; I have a 1983 109 which should have the dual lipped
seal and all associated gubbins on the rear axle, but somewhere
along the way it's had the earlier setup fitted.

       puzzled!
Looking at the exploded diagram of the axle(109 Salisbury)
there does not seem to be an INNER(half shaft) oil seal. Must be
time for a new collar and fresh wheel bearing seal. I will see
if I can fit a double lip one! Thank you for the help everyone!
       :smilewide:
       Regards,
       Percy.

Right.... you mentioned INNER. That's the hub seal. The outer is
the splined felt seal and paper gasket on the drive flange.
There are only those preventing oil getting out of the axle
ends. The RTC 3511 double lipped seal does not work with the
earlier stubs with removable lands. They DO NOT mix and match.

I think the seal youre thinking of is the one on the end of the
axle tube on the front axle
