vibrating noise when going into 3rd at 15m/hour
By: Gozo_Joseph Date: June 11, 2015, 8:15 am

hi
i have noticed that in the last two days a not so nice vibe is
present ;(
when selecting 3rd at 15m/hour the thing starts to vibrate and
make like rattling noises the ones you experience when the gear
teeths in. as soon as it increases engine revs and road speed
it quiets.
i removed inspection plates. the OD was low on oil. I tested it
on 1st and 2nd speed with oil drained at standstill with TC in
neutral.
>> GB in 1st O/D in neutral no noises.
>> GB in 1st O/D off little noises.
>> GB in 1st O/D on increased noises.
same results for 2nd speed.
I have also changed propshafts so wear in U joints and splines
was removed and the only play/knocking is sound in the O/D
Oil in OD was around 400ish. i did put around 500ml some months
ago.
does giving the OD new bearings offer to be such a big job? or i
should look deeper in the gearbox? T-case? which where given new
genuine bearings last summer.
i only have 2 weeks and a half to do it along with other
mechanical checks before trip. :(

mine does this when labouring engine in 3rd and 4th.
i put it down to the fact 3rd and 4th gear aren't proper helical
gears, they are that weird spline driven cage "thing" sorry i
dont know technical term. but it has more backlash than helical
gear so must translate vibration

What happens if you wait till higher speed to change up ?
Third at that speed will be a high torque load.
Maybe an engine or gear box mounting duff.

agree, 15mph in third in mine the engine + gearbox sounds like
someone pouring ball bearings into a biscuit tin

i will try reach more than 15 to shift to third.
though now i drove it after change of water pump and timing
chain check up and it did not really rattle that much. i poured
about 800ml in OD as well and need to keep an eye on its level
too.
though it had nearly 400ml in it. i could hardly see any
splashing while testing with the lid off and on a standstill.

If you reckon the noise is overdrive related then check the nut
on the end of your gearbox mainshaft is still tight, because if
it isn't it can cause rattles, endfloat, occasional jumping out
of gear, and eventually isn't great for the bearing on the back
end of the OD mainshaft. Rebuilding the overdrive is pretty
straightforward, and if you're only replacing seals and bearings
it isn't too expensive.
Do you still have the parts required to remove the OD and revert
back to a standard 4 speed arrangement? That's not much more
than an hour's work to do, keeps you mobile, and is the best way
to eliminate the OD from the under load rattle investigations.

hi doug yes they shoudl be still there. the mainshaft nut was
properly torqued up to 100ftlb i think with a home made castle
socket.. flaps of lock tab secured. i am thinking maybe layshaft
bolt gone loose but that was also torqued with thread lock and
rebearing was done last september.
no gears are jumping out of place.
only think i can thnk of is new prop shafts fitted. the rear
springs have some extra springs it sits a bit high at the back i
was wondering if it could be prop angle related.
:( and there is the swiss trip in 3 weeks.. :(

Take the overdrive removal parts with you just in case it fails
whilst traveling that distance.
You could try an additive to the oil I used an earlier version
of this one in my gearbox and overdrive seemed to quieten it
down with out any ill effect.
