       Play in swivel?

       Jacked up the wheel and I can move it side to side with the play
       (as in the motion the wheel makes if the steering wheel is
       moved). There is no up and down movement so isnt't the wheel
       bearing. The movement also reduces slightly when the brakes are
       applied.
       To get rid of the play, do you just adjust the preload with the
       shims and checking with the spring balance?
       Its a new timken bearing I put in last year and im assuming its
       just bed in now meaning the preload setting's too low

       hi
       if it is bearing and railco bush that are needing load
       adjustment or road wheel bearings you should have movement along
       the vertical axis (pushing the tire in from top and pulling it
       out from bottom)
       usually such movement (as if steering is applied) is associated
       with ball joint wear.

       But if it was ball joint, why would the play reduce when the
       brakes are applied?

       Movement that stops with hard application of the brakes is wheel
       bearing Or worn stub axles allowing the bearing race to move on
       the stub axle.
       Push and pull the top of the tyre. If you have in and out of the
       top of the tyre it is the top railco bush worn. heck with brakes
       applied to stop bearing movement. Adjustment is useless it just
       needs more power than your arm to move it but the car will
       easily do it when driving.
       Push and pull the front and rear of the tyre. (try and turn the
       steering one way then the other) This checks steering ball
       joints just the same as rocking the steering wheel under load.
       A large bar under a jacked up tyre and use the lever to try and
       lift the wheel. if you have up and down movement then your
       railco bush can be adjusted to re set the pre load and thus
       remove up and down movement. if this was set up properly they
       never need adjusting so somethinghas worn or broken, often the
       bottom bearing has collapsed.

       Something wears in the swivel pin/Railko bush over time. I
       rebuilt the swivels on FMW over 10 years ago and they've needed
       shims removing a couple of times in that period. The first time
       wasn't long after they were done so bedding in does occur. As
       has been said if it's that you should have movement at the
       top/botton of the tyre. Checking steering joint play is easiest
       if you have an assistant rocking the steering back and forth
       whilst you look at each joint.

       There is a fibre shim thrust washer in the bottom of the top
       railco bush and pin. Wear in this will allow the preload
       adjustment to need adjustment. It should be said however that
       with oil lubrication and properly fitted and set up in the first
       place the railco bush complete should wear at the same rate as
       the thrust washer. And seeing as adjusting the pre load does not
       remove play in the sides of the railco bush it is hard to see
       why shims would ever need adjustment unless fitting a new railco
       bush complete.
       On vehicles not fitted with a steering damper this railco bush,
       thrust washer and correct preload, IS the damper and stops front
       axle/steering tramp.

       The swivels and things wont be worn, they were both completely
       overhauled last year with OEM bits and have only done light
       driving since

       New bits or not. The only test it to get pushing, pulling,
       levering and jacking. You will find it easier to have a mate
       rock the steering and use the brakes whilst you are checking.
       There is a reason your MOT examiner uses a helper! Telling your
       MOT examiner it has had a new this or that, does not stop him
       from checking it properly himself!!!

       I know that :) i was merely saying to eliminate worn swivel
       bushes and bearings out of the equation :)

       And I would suggest you take nothing for granted. If a railco
       bush was not seated properly when it was installed then your
       preload will be too light or you might even have some play in it
       and need reshimming properly. Same goes for wheel bearings.
