Series 3 has rumble at rear when going round corners
       By: samc88 Date: May 31, 2015, 9:35 am

When going round tight bends and corners Im getting a rumble
from the back of my 88". Prop shaft has no play, neither do
wheel bearings and wheel nuts are tight. There is slight play in
the swivel on drivers side where preload needs adjusting now the
       new bearing has bed in.
I assumed it was the diff so changed the oil last week. It
looked slightly emulsified (not much) and had no bits in it.
Since doing that, the noise is still there but is quieter.
So the question is, is my diff now in need of rebuild or is
       something else causing the rumble?

Have a check of the wheel bearings as cornering puts extra
stress on them could be s dry bearing

Hubs were rebuilt about 200 odd miles ago. Bearings weren't
replaced but they were good timken ones which we put new grease
in. Ive checked for play by jacking up the wheel and rocking it
       and all seems fine

I have seen the planet gears seize up on the cross shaft in
the diff before on a few trialers ,
may be the diff on its way out

Some may be interested, i found the cause to be my exhaust
hitting the tyre (the rubber mount had split where the bolts go
       through)

Well the good news is that you should now be able to recognise a
rubbing noise next time you hear it.
You can also put mudflaps rubbing the tarmac when cornering hard
       in a similar catagory.
