Thanks for that detailed reply Noel, thats really good info. I
totally understand about gelling with a vehicle before doing a
full resto - you need that extra commitment during those grey
doubting days lol. I'm hoping to get away without needing a
chassis, but the bulkhead is highly likely going to be a
scrapper - its both the uprights, around both windscreen hinges,
and internally its visible behind & below the dashboard... so it
needs an awful lot of welding and I doubt I could do that and
keep it all square in all honesty. I'll know more when I get the
old girl home and can start prodding more thoroughly - I didn't
want to leave too much of a rusty mess at my friends place :)
Darren - thanks for confirming what I've heard on the grapevine
since mentioning RM kit - that their stuff isn't all good. I'll
look out for some military doortops in that case - I had an ex
Army 110 a while ago and as you said, the doortops were very
solid.
Thanks again to you both

I've not updated this for a while, simply because its been stuck
on my friends farm! It was his 30th wedding anniversary so he
took his missus off to the US for jollies (very inconsiderate)
then when they returned my mate with the trailer wasn't
available lol. But she eventually made it home a few weeks
ago...
And the overall picture is still good. Chassis is good overall,
but has a few iffy patches and could do with a few outriggers. I
took the floor panels up last night and bashed the bulkhead
outriggers with a big hammer - they seemed ok but one sounded
slightly 'off' - you know what I mean ;) So I started stabbing
it with a big screwdriver. Oops, I was right, I now have a 2
inch long hole in the top lol. The chassis also has another 4
inch long hole just forward of the rear axle. So I'm in a bit of
a quandary - wifey thinks I should just bite the bullet and fit
a galvy chassis but thats going to cost another £2k+... I've
found a bloke who will repair the bulkhead and galvanise it for
£500 so that looks promising.
I stripped the super hardwearing matting out of the back - it
was rivetted in place so took a while - to find what I
suspected. The floor has a few holes. Some have had small plates
riveted over them, but its clear I'll need to replace the floor.
Engine wise, its def a 3 bearing - a 901 so one of the last 3
bearings made. It runs very very sweetly, but it isn't the
original engine which is a shame - the seller insisted that it
was all original when I enquired originally, but he may not have
known the difference. Anyway it will start on LPG and seems a
good un - but it pees petrol when its run on that! The carb (a
Weber 34ICH) needs a full overhaul or replacement along with the
fuel lines... but I have a 2.5 manifold set which means I could
put the later carb from a 2.5 engine on it - they're supposed to
be great carbs when jetted correctly. BUT if I'm not keeping the
3 bearing engine (undecided yet) I have the option of the 2.5
(straight swap) or a V8 - I'm going to have the bulkhead spec'd
for a V8 to give me the option of a swap at a later date.
The gearbox or transfer box or overdrive howled like a banshee
when I moved the 109 10 ft down the drive - they've either got
no oil or are seriously FUBAR'd !
Those wheels aren't 1 tonne ones sadly (that would have been
amazing!), instead they're NRC7578s, so std LWB rims.
So there is an awful lot to do to get it as I want it - and
thats before prepping it as a camper/overlander. I could do the
bare minimum and get it MoT'd but I don't want to do that and
then dislike the wayward steering, poor brakes, crashy
suspension, noisy gearbox etc etc - I'd rather get it all sorted
properly. Which means its going to take a few years and probably
cost twice as much! Luckily I have a classic BMW bike and Sankey
trailer to sell plus the Disco Tdi can go next year to fund the
chassis. I've probably got another £1k in various non LR spares
so that should cover most of the project...!
In the meantime, I think I'll start doing the bits that can be
overhauled prior to a chassis swap - the axles, brakes etc, so
no doubt I'll be asking silly questions about those in a few
weeks time :)

I'm not a fan of the V8 in any way in a series unless done as
Solihull intended, i.e. as a stage one and forward mounted. I've
had one and my mate's had a couple of retrofits, not being able
to get to the rear plugs easily plus butchered footwells ruins
things for me. I've waxed lycrical about the 34ICH rather a lot
on here ;D , best place for that is the bin. If you have the
bits to mount a 32/34DMTL and can get one then that'd be my
first choice over everything, despite not being original. BTW as
far as jetting goes, a boingy 2.25 or 2.5 Weber runs fine on a
2.25 series engine, the latter jetting is a bit torquier. The
2.25 jetting on a 2.5 doesn't work well however. A 2.5 petrol
lump is a really nice engine in a series, if you have the option
of one of those it'd be my choice over a V8. Not that there's
anything wrong with a sweet running 3 brg 2.25.
On the chassis front I'd keep an eye on eBay. Failed projects do
come up with galv chassis, often cost neutral as once you've
flogged the bits attached to the chassis the cost is recouped.

statistically i've had more issues with 32/34 DMTL than my
34ICH. swings and roundabouts, its like saying all zenith are
terrible because youve had a crap zenith

NoelC, yep the 2.5 is my preference too - I'm amazed at how rare
they are. Can't find one anywhere :(

To be honest, if you can repair the chassis, then fill the
cavities with oil/waxoil and give it a decent, thorough coat of
paint I would do that now, and give yourself a couple of years
motoring before re-chassising...

Experiences vary and I don't want to open the can of worms
again, save to say I've had several different 34ICHs on several
different series motors over the years and none have been much
cop. It's not just one bad'un. In this application though, it's
only acting as a throttle body for the LPG so I doubt there's
much difference between any of the single barrel carbs.

That does sound sweet as a nut TBH. Funnily enough I've thought
the same with the 2.5, once Discos started rotting out and there
was a glut of MOT failed TDi powered motors about 2.5 petrol
lumps were everywhere. Now I suppose anyone who wanted to
convert has done so. Shame really, I suppose it's playing that
eBay waiting game. To be fair it took me a while to find a
decent one and that was a few years back now.
I don't think I'd be rushing to do anything to this motor save
the minimum for MOT, run it around for a while to find all of
the things that need addressing then set about it in earnest
whenever suits.

I doubt they were exactly common over here in the first place,
considering the V8 was available instead for the heavier work
and the diesel 2.5 isn't actually all that lacking.

Well thats the engine conundrum sorted :) I've managed to bag a
2.5 so no more V8 temptations for me lol. I haven't heard it
running so I'm just going to strip it down and do the usual oil
pump, water pump, crank bearings and piston rings as a minimum,
plus overhaul the 32/34 carb. Might as well do the chain and
tensioner too as its being stripped down. Then an ACR 9:1 head
and Calamity Jane should have enough mojo to carry all our
camping kit quite easily.
The plans are slowly being finalised! Pretty much decided to fit
a galvy chassis and will have a go at welding the bulkhead
myself - if it all goes horribly wrong I'll send it off to
Mosside for him to do a 'proper job' on it. I've got a Telwin
TIG welder (I prefer TIG over MIG) so will need to get some gas
and then get some practice in - haven't touched a welder in
about 15 years... and that was in a classroom ::)
Incidentally, I was at the Billing show on Saturday and came
across a 2A Maltese Cross grille. As its another item on the
wishlist I asked the vendor how much he wanted for it... £95 !!!
rofl He looked somewhat miffed when I laughed at him and put it
back. That was the only thing that caught my eye at the show too
- I came back home not having spent a penny.

Nice vehicle and a good write up.
LPG & 2.25's really go well together - had several back in
Holland and they never gave problems. You'll need a few adaptors
to fill up with LPG on the Continent but make sure you have
petrol and she runs on it.
I'd suggest you try and repair the bulkhead and galvanize it
afterwards. Saves money and you can, if needed, customize the
thing.
We had a 109"diesel as a first "Overlander" and we took it
everywhere.

Simple but very good traveling.
Good luck with the project
