Series axles for a big trailer - thoughts?
By: Matthew Date: April 30, 2015, 11:58 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
       Evening all,
I'm helping a friend to turn a static display cradle with an
aircraft cockpit mounted on it, back into the trailer it once
was. It's big, and weighs about 2.5 tons all-up, so needs a pair
       of beefy axles.
However, like all the projects we do together it has to be done
for minimal cost. This certainly rules out using indispension or
even new leafsprung plant trailer axles. Sankey axles would be
convenient but wont take the weight. We could mke our own axles
from stout tube, but would still then need to buy hubs, wheels,
       tyres etc.
Thus, my plan was to insert a pair of LR axles, minus diffs and
halfshafts, mounted on leafsprings with a sankey brake master
cylinder. However, we're at a quandry. Boingy axles, especilly
ones from rotten Discgays, are seemingly 10 a penny for very
little money. However, they would need the time and effort of
converting them to leafspring mounts and changing the disc
brakes for drums so they actually stop without a servo.
I'd normally go straight for leafer axles, but they seem to be
like hens teeth as no-one is breaking leafers any more, they're
all being restored instead it would seem.
So what do we think? Is it better to wait and try to snap up
some series axles, or plough in and convert boingy ones? Given
that £150 seemingly buys a complete boingy axle with wheels,
trys and a diff in it, and I can make make 40-50 quid on the
diff and shafts, what is the going rate for similar complete
       unit from a leafer?
       Any thoughts appreciated,
       Matt

Don't forget that you are supposed to have a mechanical
handbrake on a braked trailer, and it needs to operate on a
breakaway cable as well so not just for parking :rolleye0012:
No handbrakes on Series or big gay boingy axles and it has to be
mechanical - you can't use the hydraulics.

Hmm, that's a good point I had forgotten!
Do sankeys have one I could adapt, or are they exempt? if so, I
wonder if I could leave the diff in one of the axles and rig up
an LR transmission brake assembly to the pinion of it?
If not, my plan is scuppered and I'll have to look at something
like an old tranny van axle with handbrakes in the drums

       I have a huge 2-axle trailer (flatdeck 5 x 2.5 mtrs.) that
needs work you can have for free.
       3.5 tonnes
Obviously, it needs work and collection but it could very well
be less money than building one.
Not to mention the legal problems you may run into these days..
       Just a thought.

A couple of 7.5 tonne truck front axles are pretty adaptable.
Plenty in commercial scrappies for little more than scrap+
       prices.
Air brakes still have mechanical actuators to play a part in
       conversion.
       Just a thought. :-?

I say Arjan, that's jolly decent of you!
Where are you based please? What needs doing to the trailer?
Mandy - interesting idea, but surely that would require lots
buggering about to lock the steering mechanisms?

       Not close I'm afraid..
       Allier - France.
       Trailer needs new axle.
       Everything else works.
       UK made by Richardsen.

Ah, that could be a slight sticking point! Sadly, I think the
cost involved in repatriating it would probably be just as high
as making my own from bits

I'm not sure it is necessary to have a Servo to make Disgay
axles work, overrun hydraulic should do the job without I
reckon, also cutting the old spring moints off and welding leaf
hangers on shouldn't be a huge drama....
However there are now rules aboit trailers needing to be tested
       if modded/self built.......
