If you have good quality original type bearings in there i
wouldn't be in a big rush to change them if they are OK unless
you are replacing with the expensive Timken or SKF quality. Just
some of the new cheap bearings are pretty poor in comparrison to
       the old stuff.

I hear what your saying and have come across this when working
on other vehicles over the years.
I shall be selective due to this.

Its now News Year eve and I've been at it all week!!
Been a bit frustrating at times due to badly manufactured
parts,it all started with the large bush on the mainshaft for
2nd and 3rd gear. The only thing right with it was it slid onto
the mainshaft, that was it,every other dimension was wrong.
Gears would not fit as diameter was to large at each
end, rectified that by dressing each end down carefully.Gears
then slid on but stopped short of the thrust washer in the
middle of the bush as the diameter had increased again.Dressed
that to make it work but when assembled notice the centre thrust
washer on the bush was thicker than the original!! Many hours
spent on dressing and measuring, altering shim thicknesses to get
       it just right.
Next issue was with the transfer box intermediate gear,my
new/secondhand gear arrived and was as good as Richard had
stated so I thought I would trial fit the new bearings and
shaft.....the bearing cage was to big to fit inside the gear!!!

So once again spent more time dressing the cage to make it fit
with clearance as this needs to rotate freely.
Then came the mainshaft rear bearing, after unboxing it Ive been
supplied with a metal shielded bearing so once again it needs
rectifying...... what is going on with these parts suppliers??

My goal was to get the whole transmission assembly rebuilt by
today so with various trips to my localish Land Rover parts
supplier Dunsfold Landrovers for seals and shims (they didnt
supply the duff stuff before you ask) all was looking good.

Adjusting preload on transfer box gears.
Tonight I was about to fit the transfer box to the gearbox, got
the new gasket out and to my amazement it doesn't fit!!!!!!!!!!!
It wont go over the studs and looks physically smaller than it
       should be.

Its half a hole out on all the mounting
points...............time to put the tools down and have a beer
       or three :(
Saturday will be shopping time at Dunsfold for a genuine gasket
       I fear.
Oh...Happy New Year to you all, lets hope 2016 turns out less
       frustrating

I don't get how these suppliers stay in business, sending out
crap like that - jeez, your comment of 'a bit frustrating' is
very restrained. It's a good job you have the confidence and
expertise to sort out what's right and what's not; someone less
experienced (such as yours truly) might not have spotted some of
those more subtle parts issues, and would have ended up with a
poor, and possibly unreliable rebuild. OK, I'd definitely have
spotted the gasket issue!! More power to your elbow - that'll be
a very satisfying job once done.

genuinely i wouldve put it through a window or parts be

good progress again, despite the setbacks

Start of the engine work today, first was to strip down an engine
I obtained from a mate which I think will be a better bet than
the one that came with the Land Rover as that one has been sat
       for 10 years.
As I got it, with outer covers missing but very clean,no black
       oil deposits anywhere.

On two pistons the top rings were broken and on another there is
a crack going through the land area between the ring
       grooves....bugger.

The rest of the engine is in good condition but will replace
shells, big end bolts and rings as a matter of coarse.
Long shot here but has anyone got a usable 10.5:1 standard size
       piston they want to sell?
Tomorrow I will strip the engine that came in the Land
Rover, this being a 9.25:1 cr engine,to see what condition thats
       in.

Hadn't realised yours was a 10.5:1 engine, jammy sod! Bad news
about the crack though. Have you tried Rimmers and perhaps Real
Steel, Turner Engineering and RPI to see if they have a new one?

Thanks for the reminder about Real Steel, forgot they did Rover
       parts.
Bad news is I still cant find any supplier for just one piston
of this type(I can buy 8!!!Rimmers),good news is Ive just been
contacted by a member from another forum and he has two engines
sat in his yard I can have for a beer, one being a 10.5:1 cr ;D
just hope its not been rebored :-\
Worth a punt for the price of a beer.
