Been a busy week so far, went on a road trip to John Craddocks on
Monday to pick up a selection of parts.
       Britpart haters look away now!!

So far quite impressed with the quality of the parts,we shall
see how it goes.If all else fails at least I will have first
hand experience and can join the band of haters but I would like
to give them a fair trial first and make up my own mind.
Fuel tank is Land Rover for the Santana, fuel inlet pipe at a
strange angle but I was going to modify what every tank I was
buying as I dont want the filler cap under the seat. For £54 its
ideal,no rust or holes to worry about!

First completed sub assemblies of the build!

Lots of prepping of parts have been going on this
week, everything I pickup seems to want cleaning and painting so
todays job was to get the two diffs ready for fitment.
These are Range Rover diffs (3.54-1 ratio) I bought secondhand
so needed a full inspection and clean.
On removing the flanges to fit new oil seals one of the flanges
was very rutted where the seal runs,to far gone in my mind so
new one ordered. The other one was fine, looked like it may have
       been replaced at some time.

So on with the prep work, some hours spent cleaning the
insides, flushing them out to remove any debris, checking all the
gears for condtion but all was fine...thank god!
Now to clean up the outer cases, this took ages........

Well its been a full on few weeks spending a lot of time getting
to my first goal of getting it on its wheels.
What with delays in parts arriving, visiting shops for bits I had
forgotten and much time spent working out how to put things back
       together properly.
My pet hate is doing jobs twice so any doubts I was deep into
the manuals and on line to get clarification.
So,here are a few pics of what went on.
After mounting the springs it was in with the axle cases.
Far to heavy to move when there complete so I built them up in
       the chassis.

A fair bit of time was spent assembling the swivels, fitting the
       bearings,shimming,it seemed to take ages.
A mate gave me a spring gauge to set up the shims but I went and
got a new one as I thought his was faulty.
The swivels seemed too stiff at the setting on his gauge but the
       new was the same.
Not having any previous knowledge of these made me question what
I was doing but now they are fitted on the axle with a wheel on
       they turn so much easier.

Front drive shafts rebuilt with new u/j's and inner bearing
       races fitted
One stub shaft I got second hand off ebay as the aftermarket
ones seem to be having problems and new genuine was a bit
       rich.Ebay shaft was perfect.

Well its been 3 months since I last turned a spanner on the Land
       Rover.
Ive been building a bike for a friend, its now complete except
for two parts that are being fabricated.
It should have gone two weeks ago but its still cluttering up
       the garage!!
So this afternoon I thought sod it and started to strip the
gearbox for inspection placing it on the back of the rolling
chassis as the workbench is full.
I have no idea what to expect as it was a non runner when I
       picked it up.

Once inside it has now become apparent that this is a series 2
gearbox, not series 3 as I had originally thought. The gears and
all components inside are so clean and in very good condition
but no synchro on first and second gear...big giveaway that!
I shall totally strip and fully inspect as Ive known gearboxes
to lie, they look good but hide secrets. Its showing more end
float on the mainshaft than I would think is acceptable so that
       needs sorting.
The far end of the mainshaft has that "special"nut which needs a
       tool made for.
So I found an old diff flange and began to modify.

Marked it up,cut slots and welded a socket to it,should do the
       job.

Once I had a few parts off the gearbox they needed cleaning
which prompted me to go and buy a parts washer.Been wanting one
for a while so this was a good enough excuse to get one.£50
later and it was on my work bench.

The only other part I bought recently was a tow bar assembly off
       ebay,a bargain at £31.

This weekend found me knee deep in gears........

Came apart with out to much drama and all looks really good.
The only problem I have is the intermediate gear in the transfer
box. The case hardening has been damaged inside the gear where
the bearings run probably due to it been left standing for so
long. This needs replacing as well as the supporting shaft and
       bearings.

All the clearances on the other gears/shafts are in
spec, surprisingly, but I will be replacing all the bearings and
       seals in the three cases.
Lots of cleaning and prep work now to get it all ready for the
       build up.
If any one has a useable intermediate gear from the transfer box
of a series 2 or 3 (large shaft type) they want to sell please
       let me know :-)
