My 1955 S1 86" ex-trial
By: Mickp Date: April 26, 2015, 5:18 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
My first ever Land Rover, given to me by a mate who had it sat on
a farm for 10 years.
Going to be put back on the road to look like a 1955 S1 with
canvas back.

V8 Rover, series 3 gearbox, axles and steering box all seen better

Sailsbury rear axle will be removed as Ive bought a series 3
english axle to match the front and some 3.54:1 diff units.

Chassis had been repaired in places before but now needed either
re-doing properly or repairing due to new corrosion.
This Landy had obviously been submerged many times and the
inside of the chassis was full of mud/sand/leaves.

Picked up a used but solid series 2 rear cross member as the one
that had been fitted looked like a military one but was just a
steel girder!

Loads more repairs carried out on the chassis I didnt take
pictures of including fitting outriggers to mount the series 2
fuel tank because they had cut them off and place a tank in the
rear bed.
Today I made a new outrigger for the near side bulkhead mount as
a series 2 item had been fitted.
Not only was it to long and stuck out the side but the wrong
shape (straight) for a series 1 (curved)
Made mine out of the same material Ive done all my repairs
with,3mm sheet steel.
You could biuld a house on it its so strong!!
Cardboard patterns made by using the off side mount as a
pattern.

yeah! bloody interfering government inconveniencing our lives by
enforcing their minimum road safety standards :D :D
love this build, guessing it was quite well looked after or
didnt do much trailing ? i mean, it seems to have allot of
straight panels :D :D

Yep,no tax,no Mot !!
As for the panels.......photo does not show the abuse they have
had.
Every one needs attention so will need to partially strip the
back tub to straighten things out, bulkhead needs footwells and
mounting posts replaced so theres no let up in the work that
needs to be done.
Chassis first, then rebuild axles and springs, then rebuild engine
and gearbox,then.....you get the picture.
I did buy some wings and front panel for it and loosely fitted
them before I striped it just to see what it will look like :-)

Just a few updates to keep this post alive :smile1
Done a bit more today as I need to get the chassis repairs done
and ready for paint this week.
Finished off boxing in the outrigger ready for mounting.

Cut off the old outrigger and make good.

Measure, measure then weld...if all else fails I will be using
spacers to align the bulkhead....fine tuning I call it.

Next thing I stumbled across whilst removing the clutch and
brake pedals from there mount was the clutch pedal stop plate.
I noticed this whilst looking at the parts manual as I know sod
all about Land Rovers (learning fast though!)
I didnt have one.

but then had an idea,....

I thought I would improve the action by replacing the pivot with
a spherical joint.

Not quite chassis repairs, got a bit sidetracked with this but it
all needs doing in the end.
Busy week coming up,if all goes well the chassis will be in
shiny black by the end of it :giddy:

Another busy day again.
Decided I needed to make a rotisserie for the chassis to make my
life easier to finish off the welding, cleaning and finally
painting.....should of done this from the start off.
A good rummage in the corner of the garage where I keep all my
metal stock/scrap came up with a selection of pieces, ranging
from motorbike fork tubes,bed frame,exhaust pipe,tow bar,odd
lengths of scrap metal.
Well it all came together, eventually,to make these,

Once the mounts had been bolted on each end it was a carefull
lift of the chassis with the engine crane and then slide the
supports on.

cake to work on,really should of done this earlier...live and
learn!!

Well its now Friday and my quest to get the chassis painted this
week has failed!!!
No time to work on it tomorrow as Im plying my old trade as a
bike mechanic at a mates shop to help him out.
Having the chassis on a rotisserie has enable me to see more
clearly areas that Im not happy about.
So more cutting and welding..........
