in my quest o smarten up my landcover for the wedding day i am
       looking at repainting the exterior...
I have recently purchased some "paint man" coach paint and was
looking at a Brush roller finish... but today i have been long
term lent a small compressor should i consider spraying?
would need a air gun though --- any recommendations.
any top tips on painting my landy would be amazing... thank you

Does Paintman's coach enamel spray well...?
As far as spray guns go, there is only ONE make - Devilbiss -
buy the best you can afford, and don't neglect ebay as a source
of a second-hand one. You could always buy a brand new nozzle
and air cap for peace of mind or to suit the paint you're using.
There are plenty of cheapo guns on the market, but none will
give the results that a quality gun will.
The only other thing that I could add (from my very limited
experience) is that the quality of the finish is directly
proportional to the time and effort that you put into prepping
the surface that you're going to be painting; be that with
       brush/roller or a gun.
Noel knows a lot about painting, as does 'Parksy' to name but
two forum members. I'm sure the experts will be long to advise
       soon enough. :)

means buy the best you can afford, but devilbiss is an
overpriced name tag, there is plenty of budget options that will
do a perfectly good job - at the end of the day a spray gun will
only be as good as the operator is skilled.
Two main types of gun you may wish to consider, Gravity feed and
Suction feed. I'm a fan of gravity fed guns, easy to clean and
less to go wrong. Suction has a handy removable paint can, and
they sit flat on the floor when its time for a cuppa.
I use an ancient binks gravity fed gun, I've used budget guns
and can't fault them for what you get for the money, perfect if
       you're a beginner.
I do agree with the surface prep, everything is down to this. I
had it drilled into me, Preparation, preparation, preparation.
Also key is a good coat of primer/filler, left for a couple of
days after spraying to shrink is best I find, then some fine wet
and dry for a smooth finish, ready for the colour coat.
With the enamel paint, paint on a good dry day, spraying on a
humid day will cause the paint to bloom, you can get anti-bloom
thinners which will help a bit though. 2-k paint are a lot more
forgiving and don't bloom no matter how humid it is.
With the compressor you've got, when spraying use a air
regulator, around 40-60 psi for a heavy paint, any more and
you'll just fill the air full of atomized paint, It lands one
       EVERYTHING!
       Cheers, Jack.

the picture below was a bike frame i sprayed with black
hammerite smooth poured from a tin, mixed about 50:50 with
standard thinners, applied with el cheapo clarke air fed gun
(the one that comes in the 25 quid 4 piece air tool kit), then a
wet sand with 1500 paper, then t-cut (as in actual t-cut)
i think that just about ticks every "wrong" way to do it right.
       straight from the gun...

Too good a finish looks shite on a dented land rover IMO
Unless yours is as straight as the day it left the factory use a
4" foam radiator roller and a good half inch brush.

I've tried all sorts of methods over the years and come to a
single conclusion. 2K (2 pack) paint out of a Devilbiss spray
gun. I've had an FLG-5 suction gun for years and they're not
mega money. Some Devilbiss guns are though. 2K is as hard as
nails and if you want a finish to last it really is the only
option. 1K Coach paint, enamel, synthetic etc, whatever you want
to call it just doesn't last well as modern formulations are
different to the proper stuff with the nasties in it. To give
some ideal London Transport experimented with a bare ally
Routemaster as the paint weighed summat like 6 cwt - shows how
much lead was in it back then and that made it tough.
I know what Pete means, if your bodywork has done a few rounds
with Frank Bruno then a mirror finish 2K job looks a bit daft,
but you can get various levels of shine. I've got some water
based uber-expensive MoD NATO green IRR 2K stuff off eBlag and
initial thoughts are it's excellent. It's a satin finish but
much more durable than 1K NATO green that is notoriously easy to
       scratch.
What I'm getting at is all of the brushing stuff degrades
rapidly. With 2K you can pick the finish you want - i.e. gloss
will stay glossy and satin will stay satin. 1K will start nice
and shiny but after a depressingly short period of time lose
it's finish. And of course if you bugger it up with 2K you can
get the finish back with wet flatting, buffing etc - the 1K
stuff when it goes wrong needs sanding back and doing again.
Hammerite is a bit of a different product though, and I can't
say I'm a fan of the rollable formulation that appeared a few
years back. Compare new to old and the old was vastly superior.
All in all probably not much help as you have paint already that
I wouldn't use but even with 1K it will look better out of a
       spray gun.

panel at at a time. stick with what i know for the time being.
I need to get it done pretty pronto if i want it ready for the
       wedding day

I have done spraying and what puts me off is the overspray
getting everywhere - ruining the garage . Unless you plan to
line every mm[sup]2[/sup] with plastic first. I've done a car
with roller and was amazed at the finish. Helps to warm up the
paint but the great advantage is the speed of application.
Roller was used on buses and lorries for years. Look at the VW
       camper site for tips.
So I'm a roller convert if that's any help... and will do both
       landys with it.

roller works ok, in as much as it will get paint on the panel
evenly, but it will leave orange peel effect.
i've done nose cone, bulkhead top, vent flaps, door tops with a
roller + coach enamel. aslong as you get a few coats on it,
leave it to harden properely (like a week plus) then do a wet
flat and polish will come out pretty respectable. thats the
trade off really compared to spraying, its more work AFTER.
