       Another one - 1972 109 station wagon

My mate bought this about 8 years ago and didn't get round to
tackling it, May '72 build registered Aug '72. The 'F' plate
seems to have been a cherished number on it from new according
to the log book. Prior to my mate buying it, it was owned by
Wing Commander Michael Fonfe MBE. Judging by the history he
bought it in '87 and kept it 20 years. The original engine had a
holed piston hence the PO was getting shot of it, now it has a
known good 2.25 5MB engine with 2.5 unleaded head for it, the
original engine is in the back for rebuild later maybe.
It's not far off an MOT really, the bulkhead is quite good and
it just needs brakes sorting and the engine pipework sorting
out. I'd like to get it tested in time for Dunsfold but maybe
       that's a tad ambitious.

I'll have to do that Kev. Luckily space isn't at a premium out
       the back. ;D
After faffing for several hours with various combinations of
dizzys and coils without even so much as a cough on easystart I
snapped, decided to practice what I preach and threw £88-odd at
SimonBBC for a performance electronic dizzy, Lucas DLB198 coil
and new leads. Chucked in a set of Bosch Super 4 plugs at the
same time and it fired instantly. As a result I hereby declare
points and condensors are for gayers. :loser:

love this wagon, after my ninety i always vowed i'd never get
another swb and 109 SW like this was top of my wishlist. got
offered a "stage 1" SW but the guy disappeared off the face of
the earth when i started actively pursuing it.

Progress has been steady with the odd curved ball chucked in as
always. The new engine had been fitted with the old engines
water pump by my mate, that may explain why the first engine
died as to say it leaked was an understatement. I've fitted a
new pump, flushed the system and sorted all the pipework out.
       Could have done without that.
The clutch didn't seem all that good despite being new so new
master and slave cylinders have been fitted and bled through.
The pedal feels spot on now but selection was iffy, turns out
being an early 3 it had the wanky gearlever with large bush
thing (long gone) ythat wasn't available separately. A later
       gearstick has sorted that.
Brakes are still a work in progress, all the flexis have been
changed together with a new master cylinder, new rear wheel
cylinders and a few new brake pipes. The front is next to tackle
then get it bled up and adjusted. It's been sitting around so
long I don't feel like trusting my life to old hydraulics.
The wiring took best part of a day to sort out but most of the
faults were down to dodgy earths and poor connections in the
wanky factory blocks. A new flasher unit and stalk have sorted
       the indicators.
Not plain sailing but we're getting there.

And the new wheels turned up, fired a coat of limestone 2K on
them this morning so ready to fit when the brakes are done.

You'll be well pleased with those tyres; we used them on our
vehicles in Cameroon and they stood up to a hell of a lot of
       abuse.

Are you going to paint it Noel, or keep the current patina? Just
thinking the shiny new wheels will be a bit of a contrast to the
non standard (doesn't look like Marine Blue) paint of the 109

It was quite dark when I took the pic and the phone was in HDR
photo mode. It is actually marine blue despite looking not quite
right in the photo. A lot of the panels have been resprayed in
the past and the front passenger door has been replaced with an
anti-burst type. As the paint isn't original on a lot of it I
probably will respray it in 2K at some point, the grille panel
needs doing badly to slow down that rust. I got half a litre of
marine blue with the limestone so will do that sooner rather
       than later.
Changing tack, for those who haven't seen one the early type S3
gear lever minus bush is on the left. No surprise it wasn't
       selecting well.
