Paddocks Diff

Anyone purchased or had an experience with a reconditioned diff
from Paddocks? Are they any good? Donk

Not had a diff off them but had a gearbox 5 years ago. The gears
in the transfer box were rusty and it jumped out of reverse then
ate the layshatft after 1200 miles...

I think they use the term reconditioned somewhat loosly TBH. My
idea of reconditioned is what Crown Diffs do. I think Paddocks
idea is fix the bit that broke and leave the rest. I've heard
dreadful things about their "reconditioned" gearboxes in the
past. Moral of the story is buy cheap buy twice. £70 gets you
sweet F.A. these days, probably just the labour in taking the
unit out of a donor axle, slosh in the parts cleaner and a blow
over from a black spray can.
I've had a quick look and the reckoning is 26kg for a Rover
diff, so 30x30x30cm 30kg to Oz is £124.99 from
parcelflight.co.uk.

If they are anything like the reconditioned short engine I
bought some years back, LEAVE WELL ALONE!!
Chipped tapped block and a 1/4" nut placed in the oil pressure
relaes valve that caused colossal oil pressure that blew the
crank shaft oil seal and ruined a brand new clutch!!
Took ages to get compensation, eventually solved on the morning
I was due to put the papers in the court house.
Only recently gone back to buying anything from them and not
been that impressed so far, cant even/dont know which exhaust
parts fit a Mil 109!! (errrrr, the fucking same parts that fit
ANY 109!)

It can be a bit hit and miss with paddocks - about 10 years ago
we got a recon gearbox and zenith from them - both still going
strong.
I tend to avoid using paddocks these days for mechanical items -
i.e. engine bits, bearings and brake parts - as they used to be
nothing more than a Blue Box supplier. Happly however they have
re-introduced the more better quality alternatives, so gradually
I find myself using them more and more.
As for diffs any old second hand unit will do, give it a quick
look over to lose bolts around the crown and any excessive play
and away you go.

I'm fairly sure Paddocks don't do recon diffs at all anyway,
just seccond hand. I know a few years ago they had some proper
millitary recon diffs that came in the proper wooden crates with
all the reconning information on them but they were very limited
stock and i would imagine that they are long gone now.

Thanks everyone for your input. i just don't get why here in
Australia this sought of thing is outrageously priced. If i
want a reco here Im up for 700 - 1000 AUD. The local diif
shoppe wants 900. The selling price of the vehicle would only
be 1000 if im lucky. And each establishment has a different
view to what reconditioning means. I did pop an email to
Paddocks and they replied quoting a 'recond' diff. But thats
neither here or there, its not worth the hassle, if the price
sounds too good to be true, you know the rest. Ive got to
learn how to do it myself! Donk.
