rear axle - oil leaks - beginner

Hi All, thinking of attacking my rear axle for a bit of a
refurb.....
reasons - check condition of brakes - try and fix oil leaks on
hubs (look oily and wet)
now when i deselarate and then speed up there is a clunk, i have
checked prop shaft minimul play if any on uj joints, jacked one
wheel up and turned other one there is some moment/play - how
much is escapable....
what parts should be on my shopping list/????

Hi.
hope u found time to introduce yourself in welcome board :)
could be wear in drive flange and halfshaft splines. but could
be something you can live with :) i am trying to but it is hard
to :D
Try google or search for manuals online. i bought a workshop
manual for my series 3 off Eb** and it is good for reference

Presumably u mean a fully floating axle, unless you have an
early series 1, so, play can develop from the outer halfshaft
splines in the drive flange, next, the splines at the other end
of the half shaft in the diff, next, backlash in the diff gears,
then, play in the uj,s and also in the propshaft sliding joint,
that's just up to the gearbox, the handbrake flange nut could be
loose and finally into the gearbox, add all these together and
it can add up to an alarming amount of "clunk" if you are heavy
footed with your clutch release, it will clunk, bang or whatever
in every gear, despite a landrover being a heavy machine, they
respond from gentle driving, unless you have a son with a v6 3
ltr ford engine, like mine rofl

check axle breather can, errr, breath. blocked breather + hot
oil vapour can cause oil leaks on the hubs.
my previous landy took a big gasp of air when i loosened the
banjo ontop of the axle

nice info thank you all.... have dicided to pop the drums off to
have look whats going on, i will then make a shopping list of
bits...
any recommendation on bake shoe brands to go for...

Mintex are good, you get what you pay for, the old ones had
asbestos in and were better at stopping

Personally had problems with Mintex dusting up last year , have
recently fitted TRW brand apart from being very tight to get
into drums seem to be bedding in ok.

Mintex on the front of mine have been fine, on the rear I had
loads of snatching and adjustment problems, they seem to be
getting better as the bed in though.

I'm not a fan of Mintex, the ambulance had new brakes all round
last time I was in the US and it squeals like buggery now. I'm
sure it's done enough mileage to have bedded in and I've roughed
them up and cleaned the dust out a couple of times.
