One for the oil experts.

I have aquired 25 ltrs of Athena oil HD 85W - 140.
I think it was gear oil for machinery.
Would this be useable in Series gearbox/overdive?

We have 85W140 at work for use in bus diffs, I'm running it in
the Range Rover's axles after one of our mechanics told me he'd
used it in his series and boingy axles for years with no ill
effects. Personally I wouldn't brave it in anything else except
swivels perhaps, 140 is a bit thick for the 'boxes IMHO.

Hi Kev
Just to be clear 85W-140 means it is an 85 grade oil that
behaves like a 140 grade oil at 100 degrees C. (the W means
"winterised").
So it should be fine to use in series gearboxes and axles

If the boxxes dont have a large leak I would not use the 140
oil. The petrol prizes are my reason. In swivels, OK.

same viscosity as EP90 when cold, but nearly twice twice as
resistant to flow when up to running temps.
it does sound like a recipe for unnatural parasitic drag
