starting problem 2.25 petrol
DIR By: Mark Rowland

I can't get the old girl to start having previously started and
driven just fine. Fuel seems fine and plugs are wet with fuel
when engine is cranked over. I have renewed plugs points and
condenser, and after double checking all gaps, also swapped the
coil. Dizzy, rotar arm and leads all appear fine, and I did as a
precaution stick the cap and leads in the oven a short while to
rule out any potential damp issue. There appears to be no spark
at the plug. Where do I go next, any help.appreciated. Cheers

With ignition on, flick the points and see if a spark there. You
may have to turn engine until points are closed first. Best not
done in strong sunlight then you will be able to see a spark. If
there is a spark there then the problem is with distributer cap
or leads. Check for tracking in cap.
I presume it was last running fairly recently and no work has
been done that may have changed settings.

Start at the beginning. Use a spare plug or pull out 1 spark
plug and whilst still connected crank the engine and see if you
have a spark.
1. Yes you have a spark. You said your plugs are wet you need to
replace them or dry them. Check the gaps whilst they are out.
Refit and try starting again. If it doesnt go after the second
attempt push the throttle to the floor once and keep it there,
do not pump the throttle!!! Crank the engine with your throttle
wide open. This will tend to clear any flooding and also give
you the most dynamic compression.
2. If you dont have a spark at the plug then pull out the HT
king lead and check you have a spark from that. If yes you have
a rotor arm/Dissy cap/HT lead issue. If you dont have a spark
from the King lead start to check points gap/Low tension
connections/Live to the coil.
As you said your plugs were wet with fuel it can be assumed you
have a carb full of petrol and it is most likely to be the
ignition issue. Just work your way back through the system till
you find the fault.
I strongly suggest you get a dwell meter and adjust the points
gap according to dwell as this sets things up at the right gap
whilst in a running condition. When using feeler gauges in an
old worn dissy the dwell can be hugely out of adjustment even if
you think you have the right points gap.

agree. fit spark plug in the king lead to the coil (body of plug
earthed out) and turn her over to rule in (or out) distrubtor

Many thanks for the advice folks. Working away at the minute,
but will get straight on it when I get back. Yes she is used
regularly and all had been fine just a couple of days earlier.
No other work had been done either so a little strange. Cheers

If you have a search on here Mark you'll find a few posts about
electronic ignition. When I purchase a petrol series my first
upgrade is an electronic dizzy and associated igntion related
components. The petrol engines are ultra reliable in every other
area but points and condensors are best left in the 1960s as far
as I'm concerned. Touch wood I've never had any failure with an
electronic system, I've got Lumention Optronic on the 2a 109
(been on for 15 years now without a single issue), Autoera made
electronic unit on the ambulance (must be 10 years that's been
on there) and SimonBBC performance electronic setup on the 88
2.5. Again, no issues at all.
This is my favoured combination:

- Bosch Super 4 spark
plugs (no gap to set)
The best £100 or so you'll ever spend on a petrol series IMHO.

Totally agree with that!
It is the first upgrade I recomend to anyone with a series.

Have you scraped the crap off the four contacts inside the
distributor cap ? Points assembled correctly with insulating
washers in correct position ?
Have a waggle on the distributor shaft where the rotor arm fits
is it sloppy and not allowing points to close when cranking ? If
so rebush it.

Hey up folks - thanks again for all the advice. All sorted now,
having worked through step by step and still no joy, I decided
that despite having fitted a new standard coil from Bearmach, it
still had to be the coil. Having got hold of another and stuck
it on, she fired up first push of the button! I will however
consider a switch to electronic ignition, seems a sensible route
to go. Cheers
