Steering column top bearing.

I got an advisory for this last April, wagfinger and I suppose
I'd better do it before this year's MOT.
Has anyone changed one of these? - I'm hoping I can do it in
situ, I don't want to have to remove the column.
I'm hoping if I can get the old one out, it'll be a case of
knocking the new one in. (Yes, carefully. :smiley-furious:

Fitted a new one to my S3 a few years ago...looks the same
part...would not fit my coloum...good job I did not damage the
old one getting it out...I just transferred the balls to my old
one.
I had to remove the outer upper coloum...not to much of a
job...no need to disturb the box...the play in my was evident
when the outer upper coloum was off that it was in the box...I
just needed to remove one of the lower shims...whilst getting
the correct loading at the steering wheen to avoid stressing the
box.

Did mine with the inner in place, the bearing was very tight and
wouldn't go the last 2mm or so and of course wouldn't come back
out. Steering was too tight when wheel was torqued up so had to
drive with wheel as tight as I could bear, frequent re
tightening and use eventually pressed the bearing home, wish I'd
stopped hamering when it first became tight and took a bit off
with emery paper.

It's not always a new bearing required.... the spring may have
lost tension or indeed be missing. It can be done in situ, but
watch for your balls dropping.

i did this job twice on my s3s.
if you remove the column from the steering box it is an easy
job. (shaft stays in place but be careful for dirt getting in
the steering box :) i guess it will find its way out eventually
:smilewide:) there is 1 pinch bolt i think on top cover of
steering box. no need to remove the top cover cos that will
cause loosing ball bearings. then with wheel removed the whole
column slides out. it is a matter of finding something that goes
through the column and than using it to push the bearing out.
these bearings are very delicate on one occasion a lip broke
causing all bearings to fall out

Well, I had a go today, but being a 2A, I don't have a pinch
bolt where the outer column goes into the box, it just looks
like a large pin or something.
I've had grips on the outer, & tried to turn it, but obviously
it's solid.
Does this mean I'm fucked, and I'll have to have the lot out?

BTW, I think my balls already dropped whilst driving through
Wales a couple of years ago, there were none left in the
bearing, and I have to admit, I've had play for a long time.

hm... not good
i just spent the evening pulling out broken ball bearings off
the tractor rotavator the pulling method i used was mig welding
a piece of U flat bar on the inside of the outer race of the
bearings and then weld a rod with a sold steel that slides into
it (slide hammer) and then tap it out. but dont think it can
work on your situation. maybe you can try about?

i used a solid 10 mm rod and threaded at one end and weld the
other to things i want to pull out

Well, I've done it, I didn't realise my MOT was tomorrow. :eek:
I've cheated somewhat with homemade aluminium shims, but the
play has gone.
