Series gearbox
By: Texpis Date: March 13, 2015, 1:04 pm

Hi I noticed the thread farther down but I am fancying a 5 speed
box. I have a series with 2.8 v6 cologne engine, it also has
Range Rover diffs. The gearing is spot on but it could do with
an extra gear for dual carrage ways etc. the gearbox that is in
now is jumping out of 2nd and 3rd so needs replacing or
overhaul. I have looked at the options and they seem to be
defender lt77/r380 with the defender transfer box mod the
transfer box for 2 wheel drive. Again as previous only run 4
wheel drive, or Ashcroft do a conversion to run a lt77/r380 with
a series 3 transfer box, now this would be my prefers option but
the kit is £450 which is a bit expensive. The reason I fancy the
Ashcroft is to keep the series fairly standard but is this pie
in the sky seeing the engine is a ford? Anyone else running a 5
speed box? What is the consensus. The series gearbox was reconed
500 miles ago but developed this fault the PO had family
problems so it stood in his back garden for 4 years.

Have you looked at Ashcroft's web site ? they list some details
for fitting different boxes. Some involve moving the engine
forward about 4"

Im running an essex, and am currently converting to lt77 and 230
transfer. So far I have moved the crossmember back a few inches
to allow the handbrake drum to be removed in situ, props need
differnt lengths, mine needs differnt exhausts too. Hoping its
going to be a more reliable replacement.

Hi Divi yes have read the site hence my post.
Hi Harry so are you going to run full time 4WD or mod the
transfer box, is the engine staying intheorigional position or
are you moving it forward?

assuming your LT76 is in the same place as standard, the engine
is largely irrelevant. you have the same issue as fitting LT77
or ninety/defender engine + LT77. the gearbox is much longer
so engine has to go forward or you end up with inclement rear
prop shaft length and angle, which are the reasons the chassis
length grew from 88" to 92.7" for the start of ninety
production in 1984
it seems one hell of extreme length to go to to get an extra cog
imho

Hi Texpis, I run a 5 speed LT77S coupled to a series transfer
box using the Ashcroft conversion, engine is a 200tdi, axle
ratio is standard 4.7, love it and if you read my other posts
you will see I do a lot of euroleafing, I moved engine moumts,
gearbox mounts and altered props, worth the effort

I have modded the transfer box for part time 4wd so as not to
strain the front axle, I know of people running all time 4wd but
since the box was out it made more sense to swap over and have
done. The engine is in the same position as the standard as I
swapped the engine last year with the box in place, and now it’s
time for the box swap while the engine remains in place.
Is yours a 109 or 88?
As said above, you’ve got an extra four inches of gearbox to fit
in. I know people who have fitted an lt77 and 230 with the cross
member in its original place, though this leaves no means of
handbrake drum removal. Which is fine, it works. I just chose
to move the cross member to gain clearance (mines a 109 so rear
prop lengths not too much of an issue). Since the v6s are quite
short, there should be plenty of room to move it forward if you
want the clearance but don’t want to move the cross member.
It is a lot of work, but my thinking is, the series gearbox is
just about strong enough to handle the standard engines. If
you’re going to run more power, then the box is really on or
past its limit. It makes sense to fit a stronger box, on par
with the engine. Especially if reliability is a serious
priority.

Thanks for the replie s guys just what I was looking for I would
like to see a pick when finished. The V6 sits very close to the
bulkhead so there's plenty of room and the engine a bit more
forward would be preferable. How did you mod the box for 2
Wheel drive? The only thing holding me back is loosing the
originality in side the cab which the Ashcroft kit would keep.
