       Mooch Of The Day: RAF Leicester East. (Part 1)

       Last week on a frosty morning, I thought I'd have a wander
       around former RAF Leicester East, in search of any remaining WW2
       structures n' stuff.

       I knew there were a few, that I'd seen in the past whilst
       driving past en route to a local lane, but until I explored on
       foot, I didn't realise there were loads more than I'd ever have
       imagined.
       Anyroad, a picture is worth a thousand words, as they say.
       - So here are a few pics of my day.
       A bit of redsocking accross the fields gets me to where I want
       to be.

       First structure spotted at the edge of the field, a blast
       shelter, I think. Not an underground shelter, but maybe later
       I'll find one.

       Remains of a door still exist, but no roof.

       At this point, a shotgun went off, I don't know if it was a
       person or just a crow scarer, but it was so close, I could smell
       the powder. - I shat myself.  :-\
       Anyway, onwards, back over the road, and there's something else
       in the distance.

       A firing range, to get an idea of the size, I'm guessing 20'
       high, and 50' wide.

       I was going to have a poke around for bullets, but there's tons
       of earth been banked up against it, maybe to try and hold it up.

       Today, I was a lucky boy a lot of growth had been cut back so it
       was easier to find stuff.

       Upon closer inspection, it's sealed and still in use, it's an
       old stores building, and the original ID plate on the door
       survives. 8)

       I then found a nice loading dock, in fairly good nick.

       Something in the brambles...
       It took a lot of effort to battle through the undergrowth to get
       to this one, no way would you even see it in the summer, let
       alone get to it.
       No roof, but possibly a storage compound of some kind with the
       remains of a gate/door.

       areas, possibly used as gun mounts to protect the airfield?
       Now used by farmers.

       By now, it was getting bitterly cold, and I was losing the
       light.
       I'd spent so long mooching that day, that I'd only covered half
       the area I wanted to see, so I'll return soon to complete the
       report.

       A very interesting trip report.
       I will look forward to any additions.
       It reminded me of childhood exploits on Ashbourne airfield in
       the sixties,a lot less decay and growth in those days.
       Now I wish I had taken more notice at the time.

       Brilliant set of pics mate, I used to love poking round old
       places like that...
       as a teenager we used to fuck about in this massive WW2 command
       centre bunker thing, it had big steel doors, but you could get
       in via the roof vents , fun times !...I think they bulldozed it
       and built flats on top eventually.
       Very sad looking Land Rovers but doubtless some usable bits
       salageable.. ;-)

       Brilliant pics. Flypast magazine regularly do features on old
       WW2 airfields but never with up close pictures like those.
       I am walking distance to the old Fradley airfield, will take
       camera on next walk also get around to the other relief landing
       grounds dotted about here.
