Re: Improving the two candles up front...

Mine are the cheapo Ring ones. I'm thinking the issue could be
aim - the vague patch of light was very yellow (Beastie is a
creamy limestone at the moment) and I'm wondering if that patch
is just reflected light and the bulk of the light is being
wasted shooting off at a silly angle. I had assumed because the
MOT went so smoothly (I said to the guy testing it that I'd
thought at the very least it would fail on the lamp aim..he said
"actually it isn't bad at all") that the aim was set pretty much
ok.
I'm going to mount the rectangular driving lights up front,
because they aren't very large and reasonably unobtrusive. The
round ones I have will go round the back later to provide some
light for when I have to reverse off road/on a lane, as I don't
have reverse lights fitted.

Just a thought but shouldn't lamps in the grill set up be using
old type pattern lamps with BFP bulbs?
May be a better pattern on the road using old type lenses with
halogen BFP bulbs? May not get as much shadow from the wings.

Thinking about this and I was wondering if it is possible to fit
rear brake light holders in the position of the front side
lights but then fit clear lenses? that way you could have the 5w
on normally but wire the 21w to come on with high beam? You
would probably need the old lucas metal holders as has been
mentioned due to the heat.
Has anybody done this?
Holding them side by side the single and double bulb holders
look exactly the same size. :-?

do you think it will make much difference?

No not in a forwards direction anyway, But it might help in a
sideways direction to fill the shadows left by the wings light
up the sides of the road and help define the road edges which
helps a lot in poor visibility :-? it would be easy to carry
out a test with bigger bulbs in the existing fitting. :lightblb:

You can buy - if you are feeling flush - 90mm H7 headlight units
with dip / main beams and sidelines. That's not that much bigger
than the sidelight bezel (74mm) and I reckon if you fitted a
similar size indicator lens for balance it would still look
reasonably "proper".
FWIW I used the cheap Ring halogens but replaced the bulbs with
a pair of Halford own (yes, I know) "brighter, whiter" ones,
which does give a slight improvement. My 109 being late military
flavour already had halogens wired through some relay gubbins to
start with.

For now I've raised the aim slightly and that seems to have
given a slight improvement. As suspected, it would appear the
bulk of the light was not hitting the road where needed. I found
a good guide to aiming them correctly but I don't have a
suitable spot to carry out the measurements at the moment.

As a quick guide, I adjust mine roughly, on dipped beam and
stand in front, noting where the cut off hits my trousers,
oooer!
Then I walk away about 5-6 paces and check again.
If it's around 10-12" lower, I'm happy. If not, I tweak it
again.
It helps to cover the other headlight - I lean a piece of
plywood/cardboard against it, but a wheelie bin will do if it's
handy.
Cheers,
Robin.

I've run the ambulance in the US with 21 watt bulbs in the
sidelights for years. Military lamps (metal holders with glass
lenses) have been fine. It does give a bit more light, not that
noticeable but every little helps. Dual wattage sidelights is
quite common, the old Volvos from the 245 era used to run 21w
sidelights that dropped to 5w when the dipped beam headlights
were turned on.

I'm not going to say what is correct and what isn't, but I would
be careful with swapping bulbs in sidelights. I once had an MOT
failure for having sidelights that were "too bright, incorrect
bulbs". Personally I think it's a bit daft but not worth the
hassle of re tests etc.
