Improving the two candles up front...
By: quattrofoto Date: February 1, 2015, 5:29 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
       Hi all,
I had fitted the halogen headlamps conversion, in the hope of
improving night driving with actual vision instead of what
passed for vision in the sixties...unfortunately it doesn't seem
to have worked. I came over the woodhead pass the other night
       using the force..
Anyway, I ordered a couple of rectangular driving lamps which
will be fitted soon. I also have a couple of round driving lamps
       to hand.
So, the question is..taking into account the law (which seems to
me to be hell bent on making sure nothing is improved in terms
of when you can use driving lamps) where and how would folk
think is the best way for me to fit these four extra lights?
Apparently as driving lamps you can only have them come on with
full beam, or as fog lamps they can come on via a dash mounted
switch but only when it's foggy. I want to also improve
visibility when i have the headlights dipped but apparently I
can't. Or is there some way around this without incurring the
       wrath of PC Jobsworth?

Forgot to say - original lights in the grill, where they're
staying. I want to keep the Series 2a look as much as possible.
When I had my (unmentionable) Land Rover I mounted four lights
up on top, on the roof rack. This gave me a fantastic view of
the bonnet, so I'm thinking the best thing would be to pop these
new lights on the bumper? Will that look crap?

Did you fit relays when you fitted the halogens?
Old wiring through old switches can cause a voltage drop,
especially where you are drawing more current with halogens.
Best to fit relays and a direct feed with in-line blade fuse
direct from the battery, and check the earth wiring as well.
Made a big difference to mine when I fitted relays :smilewide:
       Cheers,
       Robin.

Having just done the same I was very impressed with the light
they gave. If you are not seeing this improvement you could do a
separate supply to test one side to the other round the back of
your house. Are they set at the right height? I bought new
housings to give me adjustment back.

What bulbs are you using? After a recommendation from a friend I
stuck a pair of Osram Night Breaker Unlimited bulbs in one of
mine and the difference is quite something. They're on eBay for
between £10 and £15 a pair delivered for H4s and are standard
wattage. I went from Wipac Quadoptics with standard halogen
bulbs to Wipac crystals with these bulbs and it seems the light
       output has pretty much doubled.
As for driving lights, 130 watt KC Daylighters are the order of
the day, not legal perhaps but there's something quite
satisfying about melting the retinas of the BMW driving bellend
on main beam who's blinding you... :smilewide:

There are the type, Osram do a number of Night type bulbs but
       these have the most punch.

I can vouch for nightbreakers ee have them in bothnour car and
our camper. The difference in the camper is amazing.

I completely rewired the Beastie, and fitted relays. I need to
have a look at what is going on around the front because I'm
sure things were better before. I could try brighter bulbs but I
shouldn't have to, the ones I have should be adequate at least,
if not as good as those swanky ones (I will look at getting some
though, thanks for the tip). The alternator pumps out 65amp by
the way, so it isn't that either.
Non of this actually answers the question though - I was asking
for opinions on where and how to mount/wire driving lighs for
maximum effect but minimum 'bling' or are we saying don't fit
       them?

New fuse box for the lights and relays worked very well for me

Im pretty sure there are laws and restrictions regarding the use
of additional driving lights regadrding the height from the
       road. distance apart e.t.c

Using the new halogen headlamps on their own should be enough,
maybe that is why people are not recommending extra lights on
       top.
