Fairly dumbass question.

I'm thinking of fitting a roof tent (of sorts )
It's all very secret squirrel at the moment but basically what I
want to know is how much STATIC load can I put on a SWB hard top
?
I'd argue that there is a big difference between what you can
static load a hard top, and what you could carry on the move,
especially off the road.
But rough calculations puts the weight of my good self and
SWMBO at about 200 Kg, plus the weight of the roof tent and it's
base etc.
Probably actually room for a third person actually, so increase
that by 50% and add a safety margin
Extra support needed ???
Steel cage inside the hard top ???
Looking at it realistically, series hard tops don't sell
quickly or for a great deal of money, but I'd still rather not
have one collapse under me while I'm asleep

Don't worry about it!
Lots of folk use heavy roof tents on their LR - I've even seen
two on a LWB so sleeping for 4 adults!
The weight is taken by the roof rack legs in the gutter so
there's no weight on the actual roof section - it's all vertical
stress on vertical panels.

Loads of people put RTT's on the various Land Rovers with
different results.
We have had our Hannibal (the 160 - the big one) on 88's, 109's
and several I can't mention here.
It veru much depends on your vehicle, suspensions, drivingstyle
and where you're planing on going.
The COG goes up - you are carrying 80-100 kgs. 2 mtrs. up - but
if driven with care you should be ok.
If taking roundabouts at speed it your thing, reconsider though

Thanks for the advice.
So the golden rule is to put all the weight on the gutters only
???
I suppose any weight in the centre of the panel will result in
the roof starting to flatten out then ???
Time to revise my plans

As far as I know all (most??) roof tents require mounting on a
roof rack - I've never seen one fixed directly to the roof panel
:-?

I made my roof tent assembly from a secondhand Brownchurch tent,
canvas not nylon, so no condensation, 3/4 marine ply hinged
base, homemade roof rack, ladder from B & Q, love it, photo of
it at BBW Czech last year

back in the 90s my mate bought a small secondhand trailer tent,
removed it from the chassis and fitted it onto the rear tub of a
109. it was held on with 4 short ratychet straps and had storage
space underneath in the tub.

I just happen to have a trailer tent here in the garden waiting
for such a project yours for a suitable donation to the beer
fund.
all in great condition and including the awning and everything
in between.
