Series 2A help
DIR By: StuartN

I have agreed the purchase of a 1964 2A ex-mil truck cab. Not
saying too much as it isn't yet on the drive, will be picking it
up on Saturday.
Few questions that I have for you most helpful bunch -
1.The heater has been removed. It has a 3500 V8 engine with the
pipes that would be to the heater blanked off. What is the best
way of reinstalling a useful heater system with vents etc? It
may be those 15 quid electric ceramic things are the cheapest
but I'm not keen on the look or the idea of drawing too much on
the battery.
2.Being ex military it has the square rear crossmember. No
mudflaps are fitted. Where can I get suitable mud flaps to suit
this type of x-mem?
3. I am a little bit scared of the single circuit non-servo
brakes. I am not launching an argument on brakes etc and I am
not fitting discs but in your experience is the addition of an
in line servo worthwhile and can anyone reassure me that on the
first trip all the fluid isn't going to drain out an I will not
die in a glorious ball of flame about 60 years too young?
4. Recommendations for good places to get V8 engine parts etc.
No doubt I will think of some more questions...

Could you use front mud flaps on the rear? they are straight at
the top.

Good idea there, though they may be a bit short. Worth a look!

Forget all about the ceramic heater, I bought one and sent it
back as no disernable heat came from it. The replacement was
just the same, useless!
Lots of people have fitted aftermarket heaters (T7 comes to mind
but memory is not what it was) Me I have eberspacher diesel
heater fitted, pricey/noisey until warm but so effective. Ask
Robin (RMS) about the ones he has.

1) If you don't mind chopping a hole in the passenger side
'glovebox' stick a S3 unit in there, thats what I did and I've
been toasty ever since.
2) Mudflaps are for girls. - And if anyone wants to get right up
your arse as you exit a muddy lane back on to tarmac, thats
their problem. (Ask me how I know.) :rolleye0012:
3) Standard Series 2A brakes are fine, if set up correctly IMHO.
4) Sod knows, I'm a TDI person.

Stuart - Is this for trialling?
Have been looking around for another myself.
Renault Clio heaters have been used by a few.

It is indeed for trialling. Looking forward to getting the old
girl sorted!
Funny how many people don't rate the ceramic heaters. I know
they are not up to much as a primary heat source/demister but i
find ours quite effective at taking the chill out of the air in
Betsy.

1) At '64 it would have had a Smiths round heater (or none at
all) I'd assume. Easiest is generally fit what was there
originally (rocking horse shit for one that doesn't leak),
failing that maybe a later 2A or lightweight flat type. A series
3 type as Kev suggests would of course work, but is more
involved especially if you want the vents connected up.
2) Mudflaps are shit. I think my FFR has them on, just cut from
strips of rubber as I remember. I wouldn't bother.
3) Servos don't improve braking, they just reduce pedal effort.
I had a remote servo on the '66 109 when I bought it, a Girling
Powerstop thing from the 60s. The seal went, it started burning
brake fluid on overrun until one morning the pedal hit the deck
on the drive (luckily) and I ended up in the hedge. I removed
it, and don't miss it. If your brakes are set up correctly you
won't need one. Dual circuit has a bit more redundancy but
honestly I wouldn't be changing single for dual. If the brake
pipes look crusty then change them, and steer clear of Britpart
anything on the braking side.
4) Turners and RPI Engineering spring to mind. If my experience
of the Rover V8 is anything to go by you'll be needing parts on
a regular basis. :smiley-furious:

I take your point on the servo Noel, but would it help the
little lady to stop the thing easier? It may not improve brake
effort but surely it will make it easier to get full effort from
the brakes? I want our lass to be happy driving it you see.

It would make the pedal effort less but TBH in my experience
with ladies and Landys they are more likely to moan about:
- It's dirty
- It's cold
- When I go round a corner it showers me in water dissolving the
glue that holds my plastic hair extensions in
- The steering is too heavy
- There is no interior light
- Where is the sun visor with mirror for me to put my make up on
whilst driving?
- It's too high up, I'm a girl and can't be expected to expend
physical effort into climbing into a vehicle
- The pedals may be OK for farmers in wellies but I can't drive
it in heels
- As soon as I look at the thing let alone touch it I break a
nail
:smilewide:
Your life will be more peaceful if you drive the Landy and leave
the lass at home doing the HhHedghog.
