Hi i could do with some advice please now that the gearing is
sorted iv blown the head gasket no5 spark plug rusty clouds
white smoke when cold clearing when warmed up but always
missing. So i bought head set off ebay and the head gasket is a
shim thin tin type. When i removed the head it also had a thin
shim head gasket and although i could see oil blown between 4
and 5 + 5 and 6 the old shim wasn't broke. Iv checked head and
block surface with engineers rule and feeler gauges there is a
couple of places i can get 5 thou feeler gauge inn so i would
like to fit the older type head gasket whats made of ferrodo
/asbestos /fibre type gasket any ideas where i can get 1 iv
asked the chap off ebay but he cant help

Try the P4 Rover drivers Guild (Unless they have now called
themselves a club, been a long time since I was a member) Your
engine is based on the Rover 90/95 100/105 saloon. Try google
the association of Rover clubs. Have you tried the usual
suspects like Craddocks ? and LR Series ?
0.005" should be OK with a composite gasket but a head skim
whilst it is off may be worthwhile. I haven't played around with
a 6 cylinder for 30 years so memory fails a bit.

I think skim is the way to go if you have head gasket failure.
The grinding takes away little off the head, but having a flat
surface is also fine. when i rebuilt the 2.3 diesel i had he
block refaced/skimmed to match the new cylinder head.
just check if it requires adding any shims?
when i did a head gasket on my kubota the manual states that it
requires a metal shim to be used after head skim but there are
       tollerances i guess.
i am not engineer just a fanatic guy .. .:( who can't live
       without spannering...

PS.. and assess/check the cooling system head warp is caused by
over heating most of time. so might as well check if cooling
       parts are working properly??
