       TLS brakes on an 88

Just wondering what some of you have found with the 11in TLS
brakes on a SWB motor..... I know that Land Rover did this with
late series 3s and used the larger size wheel cylinders on the
back ( equivalent to the old 10in front SLS cylinders )
I've heard some folk recommend leaving the back alone ,keeping
the original smaller wheel cylinders to avoid overbraking the
back end..and others recommend uprating them as per standard
       late series 3
       ..any thoughts / experiences ?

i have 11" TLS on the front and 10" standards on the rear and it
pulls up and stops very quick. I put the 11" TLs on the front
when i popped in the TDI as i wanted more breaking with the
engine having a few more horses then the original.
I also piped them with the bleed nipple to the top.

Mine were swapped to TLS following brake failure which saw me
use a car to stop my self, it's set up as per the later SIII and
the rears do seem a little to prone to locking up and I intend
to swap them for the original rear cylinders when I get around
       to it.

^ interesting that you found the uprated rears a bit too fierce,
I've heard a few people say this..hence I will probably leave
the back end as it is with the standard smaller wheel cylinders
( I'm a lazy bastard too so another job I can avoid :toothless:
       )

Personally I haven't noticed much if any difference, at least
not on an 88 with standard engine that's lightly loaded. The
change to TLS towards the end of production is more likely to be
for reasons of parts standardisation than anything else I'd
       wager.

It's been a while since I was on SLS, I don't remember them
being particularly poor, I only swapped following my accident as
I didn't fancy driving on single line bakes.

Of course decently set up SLS would be better than badly set up
TLS with air in 'em etc !
I've pretty much got all the bits to change the front end to TLS
and it's all taken apart at the mo to do swivels anyway , so I
reckon I may as well shove the TLS stuff on, I've had very good
brakes with TLS + servo on previous ( albeit 109 ) Land Rovers
so would kind of seem daft not to !
I'll leave the rear end as it is with the smaller cylinders and
see how it goes..the motor needs loads more doing until it's
       ready to roll anyway :(

My late (1982) series three with 11" drums up front stops very
very well. Mintex linings help a lot, easy to bleed and a good
peddle, what's not to like ?

mine has 10" SLS brakes and they seem pretty good. Stop it
fairly quickly, better than i thought theyd be really

A few years ago I fitted the big 6pot brakes on the front of my
88inch S2, worked well with no other braking mods, so I can't
see any problems with what you're suggesting
