The oil seal front end is kaput !! however it looks a
different size to the rear one which looks fine !
       The listing here
  HTML http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-Land-Rover-Series-Fairey-MAP-Mayflower-Capstan-Winch-Worm-Shaft-Oil-Seals-x4-/321355085608?
is for 4 oil seals so now I am as confused as hell as drawing
       here
  HTML http://www.ovlr.org/jberg/capstan.pdf
       only shows 2 !!!
I am 'of limited technical ability' lol how easy a job is it
to fit the seals? do they just prise out and fit new ones
carefully after cleaning the shaft and housing up ?
       HELP !! thanks in advance
       Regards Rob

That link is to the manual for a different winch.
If memory serves Fairey has four seals all the same, two facing
in and two facing out, one either side of each bearing. Changing
them is technically uncomplicated and I would recommend changing
the bearings as well. Not least as ball races are almost
       inevitably damaged during removal.
When I did mine I had to heat the aluminium casting to get the
bearings out. (Crazed bashing is never ok, and never less ok
than on crappy aluminium castings) I used a propane torch but in
the oven at gas mark 3 for 40minutes (approx. :) ) would work
       just as well.
As an aside, the winch plate is prone to 'S' bending after a few
years in service so I welded stiffeners on the top of the plate
to resist this and added heavy angle plates to the underside
rear so I could bolt through the front cross member in addition
to the original fixings ( ideally weld crush tubes inside cross
member and definitely use spreader plates on the inside face).
Most strength is provided by the bumper retaining bolts so renew
these and check their condition regularly.
If you are interested enough to care I'll get some pictures?

Hi, I have done a bit of digging and come across this
  HTML http://lr-optional-equipment.co.uk/capstanwincheshistory
Now realise that the 1st link to the winch with 2 seals is for
the later taller bollard one so mine will have 4 - pictures
would be great if its not too much trouble always handy & many
       thanks
       Regards Rob

Take the seals to your local bearing supplier, bearings to if
you are going to change them. They will be able to sort you out
with new seals at the right money.
