Remove some leaves from a spring

What does the team think of removing one or more leaves from a
rear set of 109 ( 8 + 2 helper ) springs to soften em up a bit ?
The springs are on an 88 and will be horrible without a huge
load permanently dumped in the rear tub, so I'm considering
removing a leaf or 2 from each...anyone tried this ?
ps I'm not fuckin buying a new set of springs so don't suggest
it ! :toothless:

hi
is the 88 in soft top or hard top ?
can you just count up the leaves that are present on standard 88
springs?
i have no experience with removing but adding. but i think
removing 1 wont make a great difference?

By 8+2, are you referring to 109 SW springs? I only ask because
a friend of mine had an 88 pick up on those springs for years,
and the ride was great - far better than my sister's 88 which at
the time had standard springs on the back.
As most of the kerfuffle with doing a spring change is the old
bolts and bushes, is it not worth putting them on as is just to
see if you can take how it behaves first?

The springs are probably 109 SW , they were given to me as a
freebie and are in great nick hence I've fitted em to the
chassis,
the whole motor is currently undergoing rebuild so can't try em
out by driving as yet, however the arse end sits V high with
these on and you can't move em jumping around in rear tub so
they're well stiff !
I could of course leave em on til the motor's ready to roll then
try the drive test, but would be easier to pull em off and
modify while the whole thing's still semi in bits... :-?
btw the motor will just have a truck cab when first back in
service, ( then later a plain van hard top.. maybe )

I took a couple off the front of HD military front ones to fit
on my 86" with no bother- probably could have taken off more!!

I would go ahead and try it, worst case you can just put them
in. Yea its time consuming but could be well worth it >rock<

I am assuming others took a couple of the lower shorter main
leaves out?. ( no point taking out the helpers as they do
nothing anyway til the rest of spring is weighed down flat ! )

^ Cheers, that was kind of my feeling and they're the easiest
to lose without having to piss about with the clips that bind
the longer ones, I'll knock 'em apart and try it ...
although at the mo I'm putting the swivels back together etc so
won't be for a while yet !
