Series 3 wiring

Is the wiring for late ('81) diesel swb different from earlier
models?
This afternoons plan was to swap diesel ignition barrel for a
petrol one (then add glow plug timer from the engine donor
vehicle). Plan didn't go as I was hoping as for starters the
wiring to back of existing diesel ignition switch didn't match
up with the three diagrams I looked at (terminals clearly
labelled on rear of barrel but connections bore no resemblance
to green bible).
I got over that and reckoned to have a plan but was expecting
petrol ignition barrel to have switched live to to one of
terminals when key falls back to run position from cranking, but
it didnt. Engine fire up but when key released it died. Spent a
while head scratching on the bench with avo, this and a known
good barrel but both the same.
Am I missing something major here? :smiley-furious:

Why did you need to swap the ignition barrel to fit glow plug
timer?
Petrol engine does have a live usually white once key dropped
back from start feeds ignition and gauges etc.
Petrol supply on 1 ,White ignition etc on 2 , solenoid white red
on 3 nothing on 4
Diesel supply on 4 ,white on 3 , solenoid on 2 , glow plugs on 1

Really only so I can used live feed to dizzy/coil for fuel
solenoid and start/stop on key instead of separate switch as it
is now.
Am pretty sure the wiring as you describe is what I initially
tried (to no avail) then thought about it too much and got all
confused. Will re visit it soon without the post beer head!!

Existing wiring (Lucas 162 SA. Terminals labelled in casting)
has:-
1-Permanent live feed
2-Glow plugs
3-White (to fuses 3+4)
4-white/red to starter
Wired as you say (with petrol ignition barrel) then terminal 2
does not stay live when key falls back to running position (no
feed to fuses 3/4) :banghead

White should be 2 not 3
You can power glow plug relay from 2 also will time out and not
reoperate till ignition turned off and back on.
Miss read your post are you saying 2 not live in run position.
Is the switch a defender version?

Correct. Fires up with red/white on 3 but no feed to 2 when key
falls back to run position.
