Hot Ignition Coil
DIR By: ZebraDriver

My '71 SWB has a 2.5 petrol fitted to it. Recently I've been
having problems with the engine running rough and then cutting
out (it starts ok but after 20-30 minutes it starts running
rough and then gets worse and worse until the engine cuts out).
Investigation showed the coil to be getting very hot so I
changed the coil (the engine would restart and run with the old
coil once it had cooled down). This didn't cure the problem so
I disconnected the electronic ignition (a Maplins kit), refitted
a condensor but the problem still persists. I fitted another
new coil, leads, points, cap, rotor arm and condensor but the
problem still persists.
Looking at it again yesterday I note that the shaft in the
distributor has side to side play in it. The play is not the
same in all directions but is worse in the direction where it
can affect the points gap. I an now wondering if the engine
speed is changing the points gap (and therefore the dwell angle)
So the questions now are:
Has anyone seen this before? or does anyone have any other
suggestions?
If I need to change the distributor how good are the cheap
Paddocks ones?
Has anyone used the electronic distributors available off ebay
(BCC?)
Thanks in advance

some coils need a ballast resistor to (I think) drop the voltage
down.
are there any numbers or a voltage marked on the coil?

If there are no markings on the coil, can you disconnect the
coil leads & put a multimeter across terminal + & - to measure
the resistance of the primary. Also check there is no sign of
oil leakage from the screw that is the contact for the HT
terminal, loss of oil will cause overheating.

Its now had 3 coils. All are ok when cold. None of them show
any oil leakage, The two new ones have been purchased as
standard coils not the ballasted type. Does anyone have any
typical resistance values for std and ballasted coils?

Hi,I had exactly the same problem with my old Austin sprite.
It turned out to be cheap rotor arm going open circuit when warm
and putting too much strain on the coil, which got too hot to
touch!
A lot of the replacement parts for the Lucas 25d4 dizzy are crap
(the dizzy on a sprite is the same as the landy)
I solved my problem with an old rotor arm,old condenser, old
points re faced and an extra earth lead from the engine block,I
also mounted an extra condenser in tandem external to the dizzy.
IMHO a worn shaft will not cause this problem,it may cause bit
if rough running at some Rev ranges, but frankly the 2.25 is a
very forgiving engine and will run fairly well even if ignition
settings are quite a bit out

Conventional ignition, non-ballasted 12v coil, 3 - 4 ohms
Conventional ignition, ballasted with 6v coil, 1.5 - 2 ohms
Electronic ignition, 0.6 - 0.9 ohms

I have a Simon BBC distributor; it has largely been a "fit and
forget" item. My sister had a cheap copy dizzy from *addocks,
which lasted about 8 weeks before spectacularly disintegrating
in a rather inconvenient place.

Similar experience to Doug here.
On the 2a 109 I've been running Lumenition Optronic fitted to a
new, genuine Lucas 45D4 for approaching 15 years, it's been
faultless since. I fitted that as a response to similar
symptoms, cutting out after 30-45 minutes then refusing to start
unless left for 30 minutes or so.
Moving forward a few years Lumenition got VERY expensive and
more choice appeared, such as SimonBBC, AccuSpark, Autoera etc.
On the ambulance I went for an Autoera electronic distributor
supplied by the Rocky Mountain agent at that time. The series 3
shorty got a SimonBBC unit a couple of years later. Both, again,
have been faultless.
If I were to pick a favourite I think the magnetic trigger
complete units like SimonBBC are better on a series. Less
accurate than optical maybe, but when wading it's easy to get
condensation on the "eye" in the Lumenition setup, the mag units
are a bit more resistant.
There is lots of choice, personally with the issues you've had
I'd go for a package deal of matched coil, electronic
distributor and HT leads from SimonBBC, and for little extra you
can get a genuine Lucas coil and the high energy variant of the
dizzy with a bit more kick. As for spark plugs you can't go
wrong with Bosch Super 4, no gap to set and a good quality plug.
WR78 (latterly WR78X) are on eBay for under a tenner for 4
delivered.
Pattern distributors like Paddocks sell are utter shite in my
experience, as are the points and condensors around these days.
Many people will preach that a standard points set up is fine,
and with OE parts from the 60s and 70s it was, but it's not fit
and forget like electronic and the quality original parts aren't
around either. If you bin the lot and go electronic with the
good stuff you'll be pleased you did.

Fitted a "SimonBBC" setup to the 2.25 several years ago.
It has been absolutely faultless.
Go full electronic you wont regret it.
Cheers

I fitted a Powerspark ignition from SimonBBC to the V8.
Totally transformed the engine, well recommended upgrade.
