       Jamming Safari Door
   DIR By: ferretjuggler

I've got a Safari Door on my 88" 2A that I paid £20 for, and
with hindsight I think I probably paid £15 too much :giddy:
It's only saving grace was that it came with the handle/lock and
       two keys.
Bottom rail is completely rotten in the middle.
Anyway, it only has to last until I can find a soft top.
The trouble with it is, that about every ten or twenty shuts it
       will jam closed.
No amount of tugging or lifting of the handle will open it.
The only way to get damn thing open is to climb over the rear
bulkhead and pry it from inside with a big screwdriver.
Not something that I will loose any sleep over, but the MOT
       test is due very soon.
Could this earn me an MOT fail ???
Sods Law will probably mean that it will jam shut for the MOT
       tester.

I had the same thing with mine Ichanged the lower hinge and it
seemed to sort it out the original hinge was vvery badly worn
wherethe brass ball sat iI don't know why it made it jam shut
but it was OK after I changed the hinge

       Yeah
Both top and bottom hinges are worn to fuck.
I also have another pair which are also worn to fuck :banghead
I really don't want to start messing with them when I'm going to
be fitting a tailgate in the summer.
I suppose that the bodgers solution would be to weld up the ball
seat and get it turned up in a lathe.
I do know someone who could do it, but I won't bother him with
       such a petty job.

I bought a set of new bolts and the brass balls off eBay for
       around £3

Try turning the brass balls the other way up to try to take some
       of the wear out.

The rear safari door should really have a third hinge fitted by
the top of the tub. The holes may be there and hinges very
cheap. A lot of buggering about with position of roof/door etc.
was required on mine before I was happy with it.

Do you have a dovetail "keeper" fitted? Sometimes they need
aligning by slackening fixings and twatting with a hammer to set
them, and tightening up again. If no dovetail, you probably need
       one.

       I've refitted the dovetail thing.
Previous (and even more rotten) Safari door had a spare wheel
       carrier on it, and also
       the dovetail.
Done all the usual jiggery-pokery with the dovetail.
I thought that I'd got it all sorted, but the jamming has
       returned.
       cornishbob is probably right.
Shagged hinges letting the door float around too much.
More unwelcome expenditure :banghead :banghead :banghead
Question is, is it MOT failable as it is ???

All you need to do is replace the brass balls in the hinges, I
assume you have tried tightening the hinge pins and that the
       balls are worn.

Where is it actually jamming? The safari door on the back of my
109 sticks and that's down to the frame being a bit rotten and
fouling on the galv sill plate. If that's the case then
"adjusting" it with a hammer might solve the problem.
