Six Pot LPG

I've been mulling over the future of my Landy.
It's got the 2.6 six, with an O/D about to be fitted, but I
can't see how I'll get to use it much with the fuel costs.
I think Calum is going down the LPG route for his engine.
Although I'd heard (hopefully incorrect) that you can't LPG a
six without working on the cyl. head due to the age of the
engine, etc.
Given they've a reputation for buring out exhaust valves when
running on petrol, and LPG burns slightly hotter (?) will I just
set myself up for trouble?
All advice gratefully received...

Flashlube kits will help ease the strain on the valves but it
would still be worth getting hardened seats fitted for complete
peace of mind. A skim and some gas flowing would also make a big
difference to the whole thing.
Personally I would recomend a BLOS propane carb for the best all
round power and economy on a single point kit. They are less
restictive than mixers as well.
So long as the mixture is set up properly and you ignition
system is tip top (strongly recomend electronic over points)
then there should be no problem.

it does burn hotter and i had hardend valve seats and with a
skim and polish it came to £200. The guy is a freind that did it
did the job and he showed me a head that was run on gas without
them and it was shagged.
They will run you just have to be prepared for it to just go
when your not expecting it.
Even with hard valve seats it will ware eventuly because of the
temps.
But for £200 its well worth the cost and effort in my mind to
run on gas.

good luck finding someone who will put new valve seats in a 2.6
for 200 quid.
can the engine run on unleaded? if not you will need to do
something (flashlube is one option, new valve seats, or save up
to change them when needed) - if you don't know the rover p4
club could be a good place to ask as the engine came from a p4
remember you are likely to drop 10-20% economy on lpg, so
consider that in your figures

Inlets are fine, exhaust valves apparently not so happy with
unleaded.
But if you don't keep on top of your valve clearances and ensure
that your waterways are absolutely clean (regular flushing plus
good quality blue anti freeze) you will burn them out soon
enough anyway. Ditto if you thrash the engine on high revs for
long periods.
The six pot is a fairly highly strung 1960's saloon car engine,
and needs to be treated as such.
Having said all that, fuel ain't that much worse than a 2.25
petrol really.

If you need someone to get quality head work done speak to
Armson AE in Leicester, Stu will be able to help make
suggestions as to the best route to take.

Cheers all,
Looks like on balance, might be better to run with the O/D and
petrol.
I run on unleaded with an additive as I've not got the finances
to take that bugger apart to 'do' a exhaust valve.
I'll look into the P4 side of things though, cheers!

I think i am correct in saying that that the valve seats in the
2.6 are already hardend as it states in the green bible that
care should be taken as they could shatter when trying to remove
them because of them being so hard.As regards the exhaurst
valves i had one burn out on my 2.6 and i ordered 6 new ones
from Dunsfold. When i removed the cylinder head i found that the
valve that had burnt was completly magnetic and the other 5 were
non magnetic. For some reason a previous owner had replaced 5 of
the valves with something made of harder material but leaving
one original, because i had bought 6 new ones i replaced them all
and i found on the new ones that the valve face was not magnetic
but the valve stem was,so i assume the non magnetic material is
a harder material. So my advice would be to replace the exhaurst
valves and not to worry to much about the seats and fit lpg.

Leafer109 is right both the ioe engines used in land rovers have
hardened seats and the series one club did have hardened valves
available for members, might be worth giving them a try.
