Bonnet spare wheel buffers.

Sorry to be a PITA again but I need a set and I really have no
wish to blow another £40 on them.
I've found a small stash of rubber cabinet feet at work.
They look about right but come in two sizes - 38mm and 51mm or
inch and a half, and two inch in English terms.
So could some kind forum member please just cast a tape measure
or rule across one, and let me know what the OE size is ???
Oh yeah, and as the bonnet that I've fitted the wheel mount to
has never had one before, I could also do with the pitch circle
diameter for mounting them.
Does that make any sense ???

Just sanding my bonnet ready for painting so can easily have a
measure later for you, not sure how to find the centre of the
mount to measure PCD of the rubbers but I will work something
out :-? hmm large compass.

I've just been looking at my spare (205R16 on a LWB rim)
The ideal PCD would be about 24-25", but the 205 is quite a
small diameter tyre.
I'd have thought that the factory would have put them a bit
further out than that to cope with 7.50x16 tyres.

As far as I know the circular rubbers were placed to stop the
steel rim from damaging the bonnet if the tyre was flat, not to
support the rubber tyre!
So, you'll probably find the rubbers are set at 16" diameter.
Oblong rubbers might be a different kettle of fish - perhaps to
support the rim if flat, or the tyre if pumped up :-?
Of course, I could be talking rubbish so feel free to ignore me

EDIT: Just been out to measure one on a project vehicle, and
they are set at 17" diameter to the centres of the round
buffers.
Measured a wheel rim and the rolled/protruding edge of the rim
is 17" diameter - maybe not talking rubbish, eh :rolleye0012:
Oh, and mine are around 2" diameter.

RMS you are correct, the rubbers are for when the tyre is
deflated so 17" it is. I made replacements for mine the price of
genuine ones is a bit salty !!

17" it is then.
Does that mean that with a fully inflated spare, the tire
sidewall will be touching the bonnet skin ???
Not really a problem for me ( certainly not with the scabby NATO
green paint job) but I'm sort of surprised that LR built them
like that.

Yes, that's how they are on all four of ours with bonnet mounted
spares, one 205 and three 750s.

I'm with RMS, just been out and checked mine, exactly the
same.
As a matter of interest, where does the £40.00 come from for a
set of mounts? I gave £30.00 for the complete bonnet, mount Z
clamps etc all fitted.

Check out the prices of new ones (the buffers)
Genuine LR £33 + VAT (I think that's for a pack of five)
Pattern Bearmach £7-10 each.
Obviously, buying a complete bonnet is the way to go.
But it didn't work out that way for me.
Plain bonnet, then added a carrier from Monkeynuts via these
forums

Could always make your own from the tread of a worn out car type
using a small angle grinder to shape to size.
An HSS drill bit will put a hole in the centre for the fastener.
