will only idle on the flat?

Hi guys, here is a wierd one.. just rebuilt the Zenith Carb 361v
on my 2.25 series 3 petrol.
was a spare carb (was newer and cleaner) and a Paddocks rebuild
kit. now running much better, apart from the fact that it will
idle great on the flat, but when nose pointing uphill almost
stalls!
I fitted a new fuel inline filter just in front of the carb
inlet as well.. only thing I did not do was measure the float
clearance, just put exactly the same spacer on the new needle
valve...
any ideas?

Rough guess, check the float in the carb, is it at the right
height, is it free to move. If that's ok I'd look at the pickup
pipe in the tank, check the wire mesh on the bottom isn't choked
wth crap.
What happens when you Rev the engine? Does it die? If so the
lift pump may be getting old.

Hi Roverman, thanks for your input, the engine revs really well
on the flat, and will rev OK on a slope, I am just about to
strip the carb again, and I suspect you are right about the
float level, it makes sense that if itis set too high it will
cut off the needle valve on a slope.....
I hope that`s it the engine is running really well otherwise!

Check the o-ring between the two halves, sealing the venturi
from the float chamber, too.

The weirdness continues...
Stripped carb again,set float gap to 33mm,it was out a lot,
around 5mm,put it all back, ran like a pig!
Reset mixture, or tried to, can not get the mixture weak enough,
even when mixture screw right in tight...
The mixture screw was the only thing not replaced as the one in
the kit from paddocks had the wrong thread..
I had another though and still too rich......
Am now thinking the slow running jet in the kit was too big,
would that cause the problem?
Not impressed with the quality of the paddocks kit... The
mixture screw is the wrong thread for any of the three carbs I
have, and the diaphragm gaskets are only thin paper...anyone
else had similar problems?

The saga continues...cannot get carb to run, way too rich,fuel
leaking out of spindle bush and carb to adapter seal. Had spare
newer carb, a 361v but with a smaller, fine threaded mixture
screw. Put it on and engine now runs smooth and with clear
exhaust. Trouble is, it is as gutless as a wet lettuce!
Bearing in mind that the reason the carb was rebuilt in the
first place was lack of power, not too happy!
On trying to rich the mixture mixture screw seems so far out it
feels loose! Surely not right?
Any ideas?

Not sure how a carb can be warped?
Do you mean the top body not fitting properly on the carb base?
I altered the mixture with a colour tune and got a good blue
colour and it runs very smooth but still totally gutless, having
to go down to third on even slight inclines on a fast road!
The rebuilt carb was very good for performance which makes me
think I need more fuel getting in to get it moving
properly......
I am starting to think the new needle valve from the paddocks
kit is faulty so I might put the old one back on and swap the
carbs again...
Or give up and get a weber!

Just a quick thought - if the colourtune suggests that the
mixture is ok, it might be worth double-checking the ignition
timing - if that's out, any amount of carb tuning won't get
optimum performance (note to self - I need to check mine too).

Thanks sprocket, the timing is spot on as is the points gap.
I Did all the electrical stuff first as I am a lot happier with
doing that stuff than carbs!
The only thing not checked is the valve clearances,but I can
hear only a faint ticking When warm which suggests if they are
out,it is too big,not too small,so it would not cause a massive
power loss...
The performance on the rebuilt carb was great,it was the fact it
would not idle on a slope that started the whole sorry
story.....
I always felt mine was down on power,as my mates 2.25 pickup
feels a lot faster, and I have freewheel hubs and he doesn't..
