Fuse Box best position?

What do you reckon is the best position for a new fuse box? on
bulkhead in the engine bay as per original or inside the dash
tray inside (2a)? The original position is not bad and likely to
be dried by heat from the engine, Not sure about the in the dash
thought it might be drier or is it likely to be damp in there?
any wisdom

I have one in each position. As High up as possible. I fed my
2nd auxiliary lighting fusebox from the main live on the
Alternator. I have a split charge relay acting as a voltage
sensor, which essentially cuts out 12V power to the fusebox if
the Alternator doesn't have the ability to charge the battery.

Where are you putting your battery Paul.
For high current/new stuff I put a new fusebox next to my
battery - which in my case was under the passenger seat.
Personally I don't see a problem with sticking them under the
bonnet, on the bulkhead, and if you need reliability, go for the
blade type, with a screw on clear cover. Bolt on bits in
Bradford have quite a selection inc some with "fault monitoring"
LED indicators.
Must be coming on well if your into fuses and exhausts.

The battery is under the passenger seat, but I think I want the
fuse box higher up if possible just in case.
I think I will go with in the dash if it fits nicely, makes it
easy to check. I will check out bolt on bits.
It is coming on slowly just planning ahead, will try to get the
build thread updated but work keeps getting in the way.

Sounds like a good plan.
I go with installing as many fused circuits as poss too, so
disruption is limited when a fuse goes.
Duel fusing of main and dipped beams is a good idea too.

Mark have you seen one of those fuse boxes in the flesh? Are
they good Quality? I am tempted to go with a Durite one as I
know it will be good?
Trying to decide what to fuse, fuse size and where without going
over the top is actually quite tricky, also planning on using
more relays than original for Lights, Ignition, etc.

I ended up completely rewiring my series 2 and went from one
fuse to space for 20!

The fuse box on the left is powered straight from the battery
and covers all the functions I want live all the time, lights
etc, the one on the right is relay controlled from the ignition
so is only live when the ignition is on and this controls
everything else, horn, cig lighter etc

Depending on how original you want to keep everything and your
funds I suggest to get the best possible wiring you can build.

We find that electrics account for a majority of the problems
clients have with their 4WD's while out with us and often the
hardest to solve.
We have in the Hybrid the fuseboxes on the rear bulkhead and on
various other places in the vehicle and use about 8 relays /
solenoids. Wiring is done in 4 mm2 cable (multi strand). We're
planing an overhaul & respray for that vehicle and as the rear
bulkhead will be taken out we also need to do the wiring.
Above the fusebox we have in a 1.0 (Can't say that here
:smilewide:) and that vehicle is going everywhere and the
electrics work fine..

Thanks for the photo and posts all really helpful, I like those
panel mount fuse holders keeps all the mess out of the way
behind the boxes. :lightblb:
Cfnteabag I also like the idea of having a direct fuse box and
one fed from an ignition relay nice idea :thumbs: I think I
will do the same.

Fuse boxes looked solid enough to me....
Panel mount sounds a good plan, if slightly more awkward to
install.
