Success! There is still some "bounce" in there when I let it run
along in 1st without pressing the accelerator but it's way, way
better. Thanks for the advice gents.

I'm heading up to an event that will have folks jumping in and
out the back of the vehicle and rather than having them clamber
over the tail gate or worse bend the tailgate jumping off of it
when it's down I removed the entire thing. That created a whole
new problem, it nuked the pioneer tools. Since this is some
terrain I don't want to venture into without a basic pioneer set
I had to come up with a way to keep them on-board and secure.
So I chopped a suitable 3/4" plywood remnant and configured some
fittings using some old British tournester straps with the same
quick buckle gap on the regular straps. And a carriage bolt and
a matching plastic wing nut still using the original oval pick
axe retainer to hold the pick head in place. To fasten it to
the seat bulk head I just got some u bolts and ran them through
a convenient hole already in the upright stiffener on the seat
bulkhead. Painted the whole works with OD krylon and
presto...on board tools, secure, and out of the way.

Since it seems like we're trying to recreate Noah's flood in my
AO I started some small indoor projects on Biggles.
First I picked up the labels for the switches that were missing
       them and installed them.

Then I got some sheet aluminium and bent the front overhang lips
and the flanges for seatbox lids. I'd had one go missing when I
was trailing it a while back. Since I was getting some sheet
that was a bit ticker and more sturdy than what it was replacing
I decided to replace them all. An added bonus is that I could
measure the center lid to accommodate the tool box, so now it
closes correctly and I can lock it.
The rain is, of course, making it too humid to paint but after a
nice coat of etch primer and some NATO green these will look the
part. Once the paint dries I can reattach the hasps as I don't
       want to paint them.

The rain has passed and we've got low humidity and cool weather
       and so...paint!

top job, that looks really neat.
just noticed your overdrive lever too, mine is a flat top knob
on it and about half the lever is about half the height, really
have to crouch down to engage it :-\

E-pay has gear lever extensions available for good prices. It's
just a matter of measuring your thread and deciding how much
higher you want it to sit.

Slightly off topic but relatedish.. I had thought re gear leaver
extension as a security device - as in cut it off low level
rethread it - put a long :lightblb:running nut on and then
unscrew gear leaver when I leaves it to use as walking stick !!

...as well as a handy club to bash the miscreants when you
return to the vehicle to find them inside just staring at the
nubs coming out of the boots. :toothless:
