       They are pretty bullet proof!  Keep the dirt out but otherwise
       there are no mines inside.
       The gasket will need changing, the oil breather (if it has one?
       Might just have the orange screw instead as we haven't seen
       under the bonnet) can be cleaned in petrol.  You might as well
       get the 3 rubber "washers" that fit under the caps, under the
       nuts that tighten the rocker cover back on, as they are lily to
       need replacing now or next time!
       The Big gay book of Land Rover stuff / or haynes is fine to
       follow for valve clearance- there are no hidden surprises.

       You could try blanchards (but they are expensive for the other
       bits you mentioned or Anchor supplies...

       Thank you for the info.  I'll get the gasket and bits winging
       their way to me this evening and get a picture of the engine bay
       for the experts to eyeball.  I've never so much as thought about
       removing any bits of an engine so it's a bit daunting.

       You can of course take off the cover now. The worst would be a
       small oil leak. Go ahead, take a peek. Have your feeler gauges
       ready and a couple of spanners. The job will be done before you
       know it.

       Looks like a 5 bearing engine.
       The black mushroom (the breather) on the rover cover can be
       removed and cleaned with petrol.
       The orange one is just for filling.
       It does look incredibly clean for a Landy engine!

       Well I've been cleaning it up to try to spot where things leak.
       :)
       I took off the rocker cover and followed the big book o'Land
       Rover stuff instructions on checking the spacing, now it's
       clattering like spare change in a dryer.  I'm lacking a basic
       understanding of just how the measurement with the feelers are
       done apparently.  I checked the first one with the gauge and
       there was slight contact from both sides.  So I replicated that
       if I found one very tight.  Since that was demonstrably a failed
       method what is the accepted method.  Would I be better off
       tightening each of the valves down until I can just get the
       feeler out of the gap thus ensuring it's as close as possible to
       size?

       You need to put each piston to top dead centre then do valve gap
       on an other piston i cant remember the order off the top of my
       head. I will try and find it in the book.

       I've got the check order from the book but I was not tightening
       the gap enough (based on that video).  I'm going to have another
       go at it this evening and hopefully I'll have success.  When I
       read all the threads on it the term "slight friction" was so
       subjective that I was just guessing.  That video shows a much
       tighter fit that I was going for.  Though I suppose I could have
       saved myself some effort by thinking of looking on youtube
       first...it just never occurred to me that vehicle how to's would
       be on there.
