Avon Rangemasters,any good?

Are Avon Rangemasters any good for road use,I've heard they're a
bit old school commercial? :-?

There fine for road use, just stay away from mud/wet grass -
they have little grip in those conditions
There quite good on gravel/rock though, and long lived
I've gone places in 2 wd on my good years wranglers, where a
identical 88 couldn't get in 4wd on range masters.

No, Rangemaster is a radial, was standard fit on defenders from
later 80's to mid 2000's when they went to michelins
The Ranger was the crossply, and prior to that Traction mileage

They're shit. They drag, carcasses fail, the tread peels off
like a crap remould etc. Go for Goodyear or Michelin. Or better
still a cheaper "budget" tyre like an event or summat. Don't
waste your money on the Avon.

Iv'e run Avon Strangebastards for the last 5/6 years, Not
brilliant in poor conditions but rarely needed four wheel drive
to keep going. Looks like they will last forever. Only downside
I have is running tubeless on tubed series rims I get punctures
from chaffing tyre to tube. Once had two punctures on the way
home from work so now carry two spares and no puncture in the
last 450000 miles.

Never seen an issue personally. My parents 110 did about 30k on
a set new. My brothers 88 did about 20k on its, and other than
needing 4x4 where I didn't on mud never had an issue with them.
I've fitted a set to my stage 1, but it isn't on the road yet
I think the Goodyear wrangler is better for the same money
though

Jim is spot on. In my gayer days I had a 2000 Gaybender Td5 from
new. Cutting to the chase, I had vibration issues and took the
thing to a tyre place my best mate's dad worked at. He tried a
regular cone balance and a plate balance and neither way got a
satisfactory result. On brand new rims I hasten to add. The new
set of Mich XCLs that went on the 2a balanced perfectly first
time, on 1966 rims. The boss of the place told me they did loads
of Avons for the local Land Rover dealer and they were, quite
frankly, shite. I'd vouch for that, and everything Jim says. In
the 14 years since I've not gone near Avon and never will again.
Their commercial offerings, if indeed they still do them, are
held in equally low regard.
