voltage issues after polarity mismatch in jump start

some weeks ago i tried to jump start the kubota and connected
the + with the - for a split second lots of sparks.
that tractor started and all fine.
on the next day i noticed that the volt meter on the land rover
was acting weird. it read near 12 and on other days up to 14 and
then 12. yesterday was driving at night with lights on it read
as low as 10 or 11. but starting is no problem.
the landy is on a dual system - home made. the alternator feeds
out two 6mm wire cables one to the starter solenoid and the
other down to a 100Amp relay that takes up a thick
cable(starter) to the second battery (both 6mm wires are short.)
now the second battery also has a volt meter that is linked to
it independently from primary battery. this guage reads properly
up to 14 and never goes down.
is it a problem with the voltmeter's sensitivity or the
rectifier of the alternator? or the latter would result in both
voltmeters going low?
i should buy a new volt meter or switch connections to see
effect

i ve been playing with fuse box. as fitting a new volt gauge
gave same unreliable readings.
there must be some loose connection or the fuse is rattling
loose on bumps.

Or a bad earth connection, try running some temporary earth
cable back to the battery see if it cures the issue.
