Where the hell is this earth point! :)

Hi all,
Hopefully just a quick question - I'm chasing down some wiring
issues. Now, all the gauges and lights in my dash basically seem
earthed to the "black" of the inspection socket, which
ultimately then goes to the earth circled in the image below.

Where is that earth? I've tried tracing the wire but then it
dives into the taped up loom, which I don't really want to start
unwrapping if I don't have to.
Would be very grateful if anyone can point me in the right
direction as this vehicle is doing my nut at the moment, all the
gauges move a good mm up or down when turning switches on/off
etc, it's a joy. :banghead :banghead

I've had a look at my rebuild photos and the only suggestion I
can come up with is on steering bracket engine side of clutch
pedal housing.[series 3]
Other known earth points are centre of front slam panel by
bonnet lock, I have one on roof of dash support casing but might
have been added. Windscreen wiper motor has own earth
connection.

Sounds like the bulkhead earth to me; as serious series says

It doesn't really matter, as long as it's a good earth. You can
check for good continuity against battery -ve with a multimeter
(ie you should get a very low reading (single digit ohms)
between the inspection socket black terminal and the battery
-ve).

D'oh, good thinking, me trying to cover complicate matters as
usual, might need to rustle up a croc clip extension for one of
my probe leads! Cheers! :D
If it is dud though, I'll still have to find the bloody thing...
Ah well one thing at a time...
