Ignition issues
DIR By: Lew

Hello all,
Been a little while since I've been on here but as winter's
coming I decided I'd have a fiddle with the Landy again ready
for spring. 1975 Series III 2.25 petrol.
I've found that my ignition switch is dodgy when trying to start
her, you can turn the key to the 'on' position and get no dash
lights, nothing. Turn it back a touch from 'on' and everything
lights up as per usual. It's the same for when you turn to
start, you turn right to the stop in the start position and get
nothing, let it back a little and it cranks over.
Is the barrel or switch bollocksed or is there an easy fix? I
know it's only a case of drilling out the security screws and
using a screw extractor to get the barrel off but it's still a
bit of a faff. Just wondered if anyone else has had similar
problems.

I suppose , clutching at straws, you could give the switch a
swill with contact cleaner, hoping it is a bit of crap causing
the problem. Otherwise it looks like a faff job. I hear your
pain bro! :2mo5pow:

The switch is held onto the end of the lock barrel with a couple
of grub screws... It's a pain in the arse to get to, but I
understand it is possible to remove it without having to drill
the bolts and get the whole lot off.
I looked at doing this on one of mine, but I quickly realized I
probably didn't have the patience.

I'd agree it's more likely to be the electrical switch on the
back of the barrel.
the internal contacts usually wear or corrode up over time
the switch should be available as a separate part, but as always
quality is reflected in the price!

You may be able to get it back to life by disconnecting the
battery and going mental with the WD-40 working the switch all
the way through it's range of motion. I've salvaged them before
like this. Fill the barrel, back and forth 5-10 times, fill the
barrel etc etc. The WD-40 should flush out any crap.
Failing that, you could replace the switch with a series 3
military type. I did this on the 88, basically it's a series 2a
switch with a different bracket to hold it to the steering
column. I'm not a fan of the civvy switch with all that shear
bolt bollocks. ;-)

Probably the ped that tirns the switch, there's a metal peg on
the barrel and a plastic insert in the switch it turns, as that
wears you end up with the positions not being where they should
be.
I'm not sure I'd want to get a switch out leaving the
lock/barell in ...that doesn't look fun

Grand gents thanks for the replies, I'll give it a go and see
how I get on. Been farting around with other motors this past
summer and realised how much I desperately miss my Landy.
Nothing better than a nice Sunday afternoon out with the roof
off, 2.25 burble and sunshine! Just the ignition, handbrake seal
and shoes, get the indicators working, replace a sidelight and
she should be pretty much ready for an MOT again.

How many times have we all said that phrase
"she should be pretty much ready for an MOT" :toothless:

Well, it's been a while I know but due to other motors poor old
Landy has been sitting at the back of the shed as ever.
Had a go at the switch tonight. What an absolute bastard getting
the tiny screw out the back of the barrel. Got there in the end
though, the switch coming out in various bits as it was truly
bollocksed inside, nice and crusty and pretty much everything
had corroded. Got myself a replacement from my local Landy
centre, genuine for £47! Nearly had a small heart attack.
Not sure if the new one will be right as it's numbered 1 to 5,
missing out the 4. The old switch is just 1-4? Any ideas? I
suppose I could just try it and see.

Sorted it today, fitted it into the barrel and wired up,
substituting pin 4 for 5 on the new switch. Works like a goodun.
