       No load misfire

My 200 tdi has started to smoke a bit on start up. Drive away,it
soon clears. On a fast tick over it will smoke slightly, opening
injector pipes I have identified number 1 cylinder is the
culprit. Fitting another GOOD injector made no difference. Once
driven a mile or so pulls as well as normal, however can be made
to misfire again but only when NOT under load.
HELP. It makes no sense to me . What am I missing? :lousyputer:

Probably a cracked ring or melted piston, or if REALLY lucky, a
       dropped/fooked valve stem seal.

Having racked my poor little brain,a sticking exhaust valve
could cause the same problem, could it not?
No compression, ergo no combustion, ergo unburned fuel out t'other
       end.
Once engine is under load, bigger bangs makes valve operate
       normally.
       Possible???
Or shall I go back to see the nice nurse?!!! *help*

Sounds like time for a compression test, then off with its
       head!.

Look at valve adjustment eg engine clod valve just open engine
hot valve gap to rocker opens up.

I had a similar issue when an inlet valve wasn't sealing
properly. Plainly seen when the manifolds were pulled off prior
to head removal, no. 3 inlet port was all sooted up.

Thanks for the input chaps. Fooled about with it a bit today.
Ruled out injector problems, and plumped for sticking valve. Took
rocker cover off ,coaxed a misfire and ,while not conclusive
proof, I strongly suspect pot one inlet valve. Probably same as
       yours Doug.
Ho hum, c'est la (bleedin') vie.
       Thanks again all. :smilewide:

Did it have an excessive clearance at the adjuster? If not, it
might be worse than you think.
