Output shaft seal removal

Hoping for some helpful advice or suggestions please. I'm in
the middle of changing the rear output seal in my series iii.
Got the transmission brake off (eventually), but not having much
luck pulling out the old oil seal. My attempts with a
screwdriver and hammer have just mangled the old one which
doesn't want to budge. I don't have a seal puller, and wonder
if you can help, so I can get the Landy back on the road.
Thanks

Seal pullers are very cheap over here, Persevere with
screwdrivers and hooks.
Try driving a small swrewdriver down the side of the seal and
levering it out, The downside of this is damage to the seal
housing.

Small drill hole then a long self tapping screw to give you
something to pull at, or if you have access to one a slide
hammer with self tapper or small hook on the end.

Thanks very much for the helpful replies. I have been looking
at the slide hammer/drill option, but my local Autoparts stores
are out. I'm planning to remove the speedo drive housing and
drift the thing out from the back as I've pretty much mangled
the old seal and it's not going anywhere. This will also give
me the opportunity to clean up all the mess the leaky seal has
left behind, and see if there is any damage to the housing
(hoping not!)

Someone had really mangled the housing previously when I changed
mine, needed lots of rubber gasket shit to be safe when I
installed the new seal.... pretty much bullying seems the only
way to drag 'em out , I've always managed tho.. you could always
fabricate a 'hook' type tool yourself maybe....

Happy to write after disassembling the brake back plate and
hauling out the speedo housing I got to remove the offending
output seal. It took some force pounding it with a drift from
behind. The po or whoever had smothered everything in red
sealer, part of the reason I couldn't get the brake drum off was
this gunk was everywhere. Anyway, now have the new output seal
in the freezer as I'd heard this might help with instal. Then
to put it all back together again. Had lots of fun cleaning up
the years of grease and junky gaskets on every part. Thanks to
everyone for their help and advice.

What is the surface the seal runs on like? is it worn or chewed
up? it needs to be good or it will just leak again.

It's surprisingly smooth and undamaged under all of the old gunk
sealer. Is it a good idea to put sealer around the end of the
new seal? I had read you pack the inside rim of the seal with
grease to help lubricate it on the shaft ::). Will be doing
the reinstall tomorrow. Thanks for the helpful advice.

Oil the seal lips, grease can dry and burn the seal.
